We always get these threads and everybody posts a dozen things, but let’s try to limit it, ok?

Based on the number of plays of your favorite music-making device/program, what’s your favorite song (or songs if there’s a tie)?

Mine is apparently ‘Hoist the Colors’ (the Pirates of the Caribbean 3 song) by Marooned, which is an awesome a capella group that sings at RenFaires in California and Nevada. The ladies have beautiful clear voices and the men, especially the lead, are just great.

The highest from a group that people might have heard of is [Hypnosis by Mud](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=69s_jT51zjo) (Youtube link), although I actually like [Tiger Feet](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d2sMuVPMkkk) better (guess why!), but that’s been played one less time.

My top by playcount is Amanda Blank’s “Something Bigger, Something Better.” It’s part of an electro mix I made for my cardio workouts, and that mix heavily influences my playcounts; my top 12 plays are all from this mix (Amanda Blank, Peaches, Luciana, Loli Lux, Daft Punk, Uffie, etc.). There’s no official video for the song on YouTube, but when I searched for it, there are a lot of exercise class videos featuring the Amanda Blank song, so I guess I’m not the only one who thinks it’s a good workout song.

The first song(s) not from a specialized mix is a tie between two rock songs-- “Luau” by Drive Like Jehu, and “Sugar Kane” by Sonic Youth. I’m surprised Luau is so high up there; I like the song, but it’s about 10 minutes in length, so I must have devoted a _lot_ of time to listening to it, and it actually beats all of the songs in the workout mix when you sort by the amount of time spent listening to it.

Apparently I’ve listened to Bad Romance about 50 times, and that’s the top song. Right after is Check Yes Juliet from We the Kings and the Kill from 30 Seconds to Mars.

Going by play count, apparently my favorite song is [_Boss Keloid_](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gzT8khyTr3o) by **Iron Monkey**.

Close seconds (only 1 less play each) are _Foul Revolt_ by [**Landmine Marathon**](http://poorimpulsecontrol.blog.com/2010/08/28/landmine-marathon-sovereign-descent/) and [_Ranti Nasha_](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f2jjFFaI_zw) by [**Bhayanak Maut**](http://poorimpulsecontrol.blog.com/2010/05/31/bhayanak-maut/), both from albums I wrote about on my blog.

The song with the highest play count for me is _Tear Stained Eye_ by Son Volt, although I apparently haven’t listened to it since last November. Next (and much more recently played) is Steve Earle and Irish accordianist Sharon Shannon doing _The Galway Girl_ live at the Cambridge Folk Festival a few years back.

My top five are, apparently:

“Say It Ain’t So” - Weezer
“This Little Light of Mine” - Bruce Springsteen (Live in Dublin)
“Black Sabbath” - Black Sabbath
“Battle Without Honor or Humanity” - Tomoyasu Hotei
“Free Bird (Live)” - Lynyrd Skynyrd

I have no idea what that says about me, except that my musical tastes are distressingly mainstream.

According to last.fm, it’s [the brilliant green - Funny Girlfriend](http://youtu.be/s2vAPHCcpuQ) with 356 plays. Can’t say as I’m surprised by that.

Glorior Belli’s “Severed From The Self,” from the _Manifesting The Raging Beast_ album.

Which _really_ surprises me.

That’s a great list though. Mainstream yes, but with underrated Weezer and Sabbath songs. Is it a particularly good Free Bird live version?

Thanks!

The “Free Bird” is the 14+ minute version from their \*All Time Greatest Hits \*compilation. I can’t find a decent version of it online, though.

Apparently my top five is:

The xx – Intro
The xx – VCR
Camera Obscura – The Sweetest Thing
Black Kids – I’m Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How To Dance With You
The Field Mice – When Morning Comes To Town

Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It).

Don’t judge me! There was a time when my kids played it nearly non-stop for about, oh, three weeks or so.

Milly’s Cafe by Fred Eaglesmith

I usually play random, but pick one on purpose to start it off. That one is closely followed by a bunch of Mark Knopfler and Stan Rogers songs. I’m not sure how Richard Thompson’s Miss Patsy shows up at number 10–random play must select it a lot.

#2 is “Baby It’s Cold Outside,” the _Glee_ version, which is, indeed, wonderful.

The rest of the top ten are various songs by Either/Orchestra, a contemporary big band who I put on when I’m using the iPod to block ambient stuff so I can write.
