> For comedic/absurdist takes on the Western, _Blazing Saddles_ is always a classic, and _Paint Your Wagon_ is bizarrely absurdist, a film no one should try to remake because it probably shouldn’t have been made in the first place. _The Ballad of Cable Hogue_ is almost unheard of but deserves a look even if it was made at a point in Peckinpah’s career where drugs and booze were starting to get the best of him, and _Duck, You Sucker_ rides the line between satire and serious with a phenomenal as always James Colburn in the lead.

_Duck, You Sucker_ is a terrible title - I prefer _A Fistful of Dynamite_ (or even _Once Upon A Time…the Revolution_). Not sure why they settled for the worst title choice of the three options.

For absurdist Westerns I’ll throw in _A Million Ways to Die in the West_ for completeness’ sake. If you’re a Seth McFarlane fan, you’ll love it. If you can’t stand McFarlane, well… there are still some killer jokes, but you’ll loathe the rest of it. The humor is mostly “people with modern sensibilities living in the past” based, plus assorted jokes about sex and shit. Best scene is actually the stinger, I have to admit.

I have to say that this has some of the funniest stuff in any movie I’ve ever seen. Not all of the time, but, enough to make it great.

David Carradine has always been great; however, in this movie, so much of the dialogue, and some of the plot, sucks so bad that I wince when I think of watching it again.

Fake “color inside the lines” answer: **No Country For Old Men** (it’s really a western if you think about it)

Actual “color inside the lines” answer: **Young Guns**

“Color outside the lines” answer: **Yojimbo** - with the exception of not taking place in the American West, it’s totally a western.

First in with my favorite western, Sergio Leone’s comedy masterpiece “My Name Is Nobody”, with Henry Fonda and Terence Hill.

I’m a McFarlane fan, like his sense of humor and still enjoy _Family Guy_, but my god, _A Million Ways to Die in the West_ was excruciatingly bad. All the jokes fell flat, Seth is NO lead actor, and it was easily one of the worst movies I not only saw that year, but in recent years.

Am I the only one who **loves** _Support Your Local Sheriff_ but never cared for _Support Your Local Gunfighter_? I can’t put my finger on it, I can watch and re-watch _Local Sheriff_ but will pass on _Local Gunfighter_.

And I don’t know why.

Same here. I saw _Gunfighter_ once years and thought it was just so-so. But _Sheriff_ is a masterpiece.

I agree on all accounts. It really was just that bad.

_Gunfighter_ kind of lacked that certain something that _Sheriff_ had. It always struck me as being a bit of a darker film, which maybe is why it didn’t really work, given that it was also a farce comedy.

I’ll add my vote for _Support Your Local Gunfighter_ and _Silverado_. Going a little outside the box, I thought \* Rango\* was a most enjoyable animated western. And speaking of Johnny Depp, I am not ashamed to say that I really liked _The Lone Ranger_.

Silverado is a joy. It brought back the fun to westerns after a long drought.

Of the classics, El Dorado is my favorite; I love watching that one, again and again.

I’m not really fond of any of the oldies, the silent-movie era and the 40s. I can’t think of anything from that era that really stands out.

I watched Eight Million Ways To Die because the trailer made me think it might have enough over-the-top silly violence to be consistently funny. There were maybe two or three scenes worth watching, but after the first ten or fifteen minutes it just became disgusting and unfunny.
