> _Gunfighter_ kind of lacked that certain something that _Sheriff_ had. It always struck me as being a bit of a darker film, which maybe is why it didn’t really work, given that it was also a farce comedy.

I wouldn’t say that it was darker, so much as that it just sucked.

_Support Your Local Sheriff_ might have been the anomaly. The same director gave us [Dirty Dingus Magee](http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0065642/) and [Mail Order Bride](http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0058318/?ref_=nm_flmg_dr_41). Both are nearly unwatchable comedy westerns. In addition to that, he is responsible for two Wild Wild West TV movies that are notable only for being a little bit better than the Will Smith travesty, despite having Robert Conrad and Ross Martin. In fact, a look over [Burt Kennedy’s](http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0447944/?ref_=tt_ov_dr) IMDB page shows he directed a lot of shit movies.

> _The Big Country_. That scene where he’s been out for a while, comes back to find people at the ranch freaking out “he will have got lost!” and he points out that he’s used to navigating the sea kills me. …

I loved this! All the “veterans” were so impressed with themselves and their ability to survive in their “big country”, and convinced that newbie Gregory Peck was a helpless kitten doomed to death if he wasn’t watched like a kid. And to him, a guy who sailed the featureless oceans, their big country was hardly more than a pond.

This is a great great movie, not especially well known, and an interesting challenge to the many heroic western myths that most western films embraced.
