Fine with them, but turned’em off. I’d rather judge posts by their content, and often tune out the usernames entirely. ---

The best thing I can say about avatars on message boards is that they are pointless – anything else I would say about them is negative. There are plenty of places people can go to look at pictures – I come here to read. I don’t think trying to make this place like every other place is good idea, nor is trying to please everyone. ---

Well, I was going to add one but every picture I try to use (just my own photos taken with my phone) it says they’re too big and I don’t know how to resize them. ---

It is fairly easy on a PC/Laptop. Good old Paint can actually do it pretty easy. (as can dozens of other image tools) Open the picture in Paint: Choose the resize button from the image section of the ribbon. Set the Resize by to Pixels from Percentage and enter 50 for the Horizontal and maintain aspect ratio. Click OK and save then upload to Straightdope. ---

Well, it’s a new toy. I imagine the shine will wear off. People went poll crazy for a while when that was added. If you want to see what they look like go to your [Control Panel’s edit options page](https://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/profile.php?do=editoptions), scroll down to “thread display options” and tick the “show avatars” box. ---
