What's your perfect grunge jam?

It’s interesting to see here what people consider grunge. I guess my definition is a bit narrower. To me, “She Hates Me” has more in common with California pop-punk than grunge. The melodies definitely are too “happy” to be grunge, the quality of the lyrics is teenage pop, etc. Then again, something like their “Control” gets a little closer to the feel of grunge, although that also doesn’t sound quite like grunge to me, either, but more modern, a bit more like, say, I dunno, Nickelback or even Foo Fighters. I guess that’s where the “post-grunge” label comes from, although I’m not familiar with it.

I’m almost a little surprised no one mentioned Smashing Pumpkins yet. They’re a band that often gets lopped into grunge (and one of my favorite rock acts, period), but they also exist outside of grunge in my own musical headspace.

To me, when it comes to grunge, I’m reminded of what Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart said about obscenity in Jacobellis V Ohio:

[Emphasis added.]

Yeah, that’s more- or-less the same for me. I can’t exactly quantify it, either. “She Hates Me” reminds me of an Offspring song which, to me, falls firmly in the “not grunge” category.

Lots of good choices here but nothing from the boys from Ellensburg, Screaming Trees. I think Dust is a beautiful album and my favorite. But for grunge, I’ll go with Uncle Anesthesia (the song and album). Man, I love Lanegan. With ST, solo, w/ Isobel Campbell, dropping in with QOTSA, etc.

Oh, I’d definitely have given the Screaming Trees a nod if I picked out more than one song.
