My phone alarm is set to the harp sound, but I’m usually woken up by the dogs. They’re my girlfriend’s dogs, but they want me to feed them and let them out so she can stay asleep. They are adorable, and they are the worst.

A couple of years ago I bought a Chumby. As I’m a bit of a gadget freak, it intrigued me. Square screen in plastic casing about five inches each way, fed by WiFi. You could subscribe to a bunch of disparate channels that had everything from news and sports to techie stuff, webcams, etc.

Then after a year or so, the company behind it went belly-up. One day all of the channels just disappeared, and the only thing left was the alarm clock.

Now mind you, it’s a very GOOD alarm clock, with some pretty cool features. But it’s still a $70 alarm clock.

So I wake up each morning to the sounds of the Westminster chimes…courtesy of my Chumby.

I usually get up at about 5:30 am. But for a while, my radio alarm was set for 6 am. My dogs internalized that, and if I am not up already, they start leaping on my bed and making snorting wooffy noises at PRECISELY 6 am. Not one minute before nor one minute after.

For many years I used a traditional radio/alarm clock. Now I just use the alarm on my Smartphone.

I don’t use an alarm. But I wake up at the same time every day, so as long as I go to bed at roughly the same time, and give myself 6 to 8 hours before I have to be up, it’s no problem. Also, I’m not a very heavy sleeper, and typically wake up before I need to. I glance at the clock, and give myself another 15 or so minutes, depending on what the clock says, and that’s my snooze button.
The only drawback to this method is that I pretty much go to sleep at the same time, even on the weekends, with rare exceptions.

I have two alarm clocks. One is a mosquito buzz at high volume. One has a very long snooze cycle. Neither one is very effective. My dog’s little pee-p sounds work best.

</div>

I pretty much just wake up whenever I want to. The alarm is set, but at a late hour that I really just don’t want to sleep past because if so then there goes the day, so I almost never sleep long enough to be roused by it.

I wake up before the alarm 99% of the time. My brain just knows when to wake up. The only time I don’t wake up before the alarm is after a boozy night, but I usually have no problems with this either.

My phone has a gentle wake option, it plays whatever generic new-agey music really quietly starting a minute before the set time. I’m usually awake by 10 seconds or so. It rarely goes to full volume before I’m awake. With my schedule, I get up around noon to 1pm. Depending on the time of year it’s also the time the full sun goes around the house, over the roof, and shines on my face, so that gets me up, too.

Somehow I have the most polite cats and they never wake me up for food. One of them does like to get under the covers, though, and will sometimes randomly wake me up while trying to root under a leg or arm or boob with his head. Dumbass.

We have a confused dark-eyed junco who wakes up several times a night, sings exactly one line of his song and (apparently) goes right back to sleep. This time of year, he’s up and going at it in earnest at 3:30 in the AM. Fortunately, he’s not loud and has a pretty song besides.

I’ve always hated being jarred awake (who does?) so I trained myself loooong ago to wake up a few minutes before the alarm goes off. Though it’s been so long since I’ve had to get up early, I wonder if I can still do it. I bet I can.

When my daughter was a newborn, she would wake up every hour or so through the night. She only nursed, so I couldn’t feed her. I was new to baby care, so I’d pick her up and change her diaper. I did that very often for months, tossing hundreds(?) of bone-dry diapers in the process.

When I realized you could tell a heavy, wet diaper from a light weight, dry diaper I felt like an idiot. A tired idiot.

Good times.
