> Disgraced evangelical pastor Ted Haggard says he was sexually abused as a child and that the experience “started to rage in my mind and in my heart” when he was caught up in a sex scandal involving a male prostitute. Haggard made the remarks in two recent sermons in Morrison, Ill., ABC’s “Good Morning America” reported Wednesday.

Yeah, I can just see some little kid walking in, seeing his parents making the beast with the double backs, and **not** being traumatized when they tell him, “Honey, we’re only doing this because we love you.”

OK Ted, that explains the buttsekks, but what about the crystal meth? Huh? 😛

I love this guy. The very first time I saw him on TV (some evangelical thing) I could see something in his eyes (no, not love :p). He is haunted by something. Badly.

Not a big fan of Ted Haggard but if he was molested, it would explain the sex and drug problems- here’s wishing him the best.

And here one minister tries to break the sometimes-justified accusation of Chrisitan prudishness & anti-sex attitudes, and then he gets attacked for encouraging frequent marital lovemaking. Whatever.

Of course, it could _also_ have the effect of causing young people to just get hitched because they want nookie. Then you wind up with people getting divorced, when they realized that they didn’t love the other person, they just wanted to have sex. No. No, it would not. At least not the sex part. There is no significant correlation between childhood molestation and sexual orientation in adulthood.

I agree with the preacher that in marrage sex is a good thing. It is one of the things that unite a couple. Sex is not dirty.

Yes I believe sex outside of marrage is a mistake. It cheapens it. Sex being so great ia not just one of those things. I believe it is a gift from God. Christians should have a very active sex life.

The church use to teach that sex was wrong and you should not have sex outside of marrage. And some how it became OK when you got married. HOw can something bad become good. People rejected that Idea and because of they rejected the church and sex became cheap. Ok lets do it it does not matter.

If you save yourself for someone special and keep it special sex can have real value. There is a difference between having sex and making love with you wife.

I have done both. And I regret the times before my wife and wish I could turn back the clock on that.

TH could indeed be lying. That’s why I said “if”.

I’m not sure about some details in that whole “Evangelical divorce rate” thing. Does it only count people who have divorced since becoming Evangelicals? How does it define “Evangelical”? What is the difference in divorce rates among strong, moderate, & casual Evangelicals (as determined, say, by doctrinal fidelity & frequency of church-going)? Too many unanswered questions.

Kolga- not orientation, I agree, but how about dysfunctional sexual behavior? TH may be a closeted/repressed gay or bi, or he may have had an some problem of sexual compulsive behavior which could have manifested in a variety of ways.

Being gay is only a “sex problem” because powerful men like Thomas S. Monson and Ted Haggard work so hard to make it one.

**Kolga** , I agree that molestation does not “turn” people, but I wonder if gay kids are more likely to be sexually exploited. Does the “no correlation” thing cut both ways?

But IS he gay or does he have problematic sexual compulsions that happened to manifest in that direction?

Anyone who is married & sneaks off to have gay sex with a meth dealer has a drug & sex problem.

😕

How does having sex before you are married cheapen what you have with your spouse? Does going out to dinner with a woman you don’t marry cheapen the dining experiences you will later have with your wife?

My relationship with my boyfriend is stronger because of what I have learned from my previous experiences with men, sexual and otherwise. I know more about myself and dealing with the opposite sex and how to handle problems that you encounter in a relationship that I wouldn’t have the foggiest clue about if I didn’t have that previous experience. I am more open and willing to experiment and I give better head. How are these things not a net positive for a relationship?

Don’t insult other posters in this forum. This thread is getting a little testy anyway, and if it turns into an argument of the virtues or pitfalls of premarital sex or the effects of molestation on adult sexuality, I may move it over to Great Debates. Regardless of where this ends up, let’s keep it civil.

Roseanne Barr also recalled that she was sexually molested as a child about the same time she got into a shitload of trouble for other things. So, coincidentally, did her husband, Tom Arnold, who was also in trouble. There were in fact several celebrities who revealed this after they had big PR problems. I won’t say Haggard’s a liar, but I’m most definitely skeptical, and if he _did_ get molested then I think he’s a gay man who happens to have been molested as a child and not a kid who got molested so he grew up buying sex and meth with a prostitute.

And uh… if he is telling the truth and believes that childhood molestation=gay adult, shouldn’t that make him MORE sympathetic of gays and not less? You’ll remember his sympathy wasn’t over developed towards them before his own outing.
As for the 7 days of marital sex, that’s a great idea. NOTHING will put the spark back into your marriage quicker than having sex as a duty whether you or your partner feel like it or not . (“And it was a miracle… there was only enough Estroglide to last for one night, and yet it lasted for eight…damned…long…boring…nights!”)

It certainly may have in some way contributed to drug use and compulsive behavior, but Occam’s Razor also posits that perhaps, JUST perhaps, he was gay or bi his whole life, and attempting to force himself into an evangelical role where either of those things are considered evil and wrong was more contributory.l

You know how lots of churches now have a “Fall Festival” or “Harvest Festival” that just happens to coincide with Halloween? Maybe they’ll retool Valentine’s Day into some kind of “Married Sex Celebration”.
