When cats attack - a cautionary urban tale

Tonight after the vet trip he for sure gets an extra special treat.

Cranky I know what you mean. I was thinking the same thing. Gosh, there’s some really ill people here and me, cat bite. And the doctor said to me that if it were ever to happen again, that I should go directly to the emergency room. So you did exactly the right thing too.

Also, the irony of being about ten feet away from a lion in the wild less then a year ago only to end up attacked by a house cat is also not lost on me. Ahhhh fate.

Ahhh yes, the joys of living around people who let their cats roam free and unfettered, thereby decimating the local bird/squirrel/rabbit population.

AssHats the lot of them.

'Course if they see a dog running around loose, they start bleating and screeching and they call animal control, but their little precious   can roam the neighborhood unchecked.

I have had outside cats, Muldoon. What, pray tell, is an “AssHat”?

No rabies observation for Cosmo.

Antibiotics, though for at least ten days. The vet said that cat bites are especially nasty. She expects that even with the antibiotics, the wounds will abcess and will need draining. So, we go back to the vet on Friday. Although she says if swelling occurrs sooner, bring him in right away.

The dog seems unphased by all of this and I am thrilled all to pieces about that.

Still no moral to this whole wild adventure.

My sister and I have been scouring the block looking for the cat, I from a safe distance and protected by my car, my sister, much braver than I, on foot.

Thanks for the support and advice you guys! I love this place!!!

i’m glad you and your pup came through this slightly scathed. cat bites can be rather dangerous and quite a few people have ended up in hospital for days because of one.

not so nice a tale in philly today, they found a woman who had been killed by her recently adopted dog. the dog had been in the shelter for quite some time with out incident, but had been brought in because the dog bit the first owner. there were grooming tools by the woman and the dogs nails looked clipped. the theory is that the dog was tramatized by grooming at some point or that the owner accidentally clipped into the quick, the dog freaked and she bleed out from the wounds. sad for both woman and dog.

I’d like to see that article, chair.

It takes three or four people to clip our Isaac’s claws; he just freaks out, poor baby, one to clip the claws and the rest to hold him down. I don’t know what happened.

And yes, cat bites are nasty. I saw something about it on Animal Planet once, this woman got bit very badly when rescuing her cat from being impaled (gaaaaaah!) on a fence, and the vets sent her to the human doctor. She could have lost her hand! So be very very very very good about the antibiotics for both of you, 'kay? (She and the cat were both fine in the end. That channel can be traumatizing!)

This story instantly reminded me of the “How Many Cats Can You Take On” thread…I had suggested that my capacity to kill cats one on one was virtually unlimited if I had to. (Purely in the context of the thread that is, I am a cat lover!)

I think that cats behavior is extraordinarily unusual, I’ve never seen anything quite like it. Almost makes me wish I had been there to give it a swift kick in the ass.

As for the actual topic, I’ve never personally been attacked by a cat outside (mine don’t count, then countless times). I have seen big tomcats menace my beagle when I only had one dog. Now, with the big black shepherd (loves our cats, stray cats must be destroyed) they don’t hang around long enough to slash my poor friendly beagles in the nose.

Second on the punt. I’ve had to punt a cat off my poor beagle. He got slashed near the eye, and the cat continued attacking. Weird part, the cat just sat there at first, no hissing.

It ran off. Stray animals attacking your animals deserve harsh treatment. That may be a bit harsh, but fuck them. It’s self defense. Owners who let their pets out to attack other animals deserve ZERO consideration.

Erm, “the heck with” them. This seemed like a pit thread. I know that if I was attacked by a cat I would pit it. We need a potty mouth smilie. Maybe a bar of soap over the mouth.

the grooming theory was brought about by an interview by action news with one of the people where the dog is housed now.

how are you and the pup doing, jane d’oh?

The dog’s leg where the bites are seem to be ok. A little swollen, but not really looking like they will abcess. So I’m hopeful.

My wounds are swollen and tender, but no signs of infection.

Trust me when I say the dog and I both will be finishing all of our antibiotics.

Two days post cat attack and still no sign of the cat. None of the neighbors have seen or know of the cat. We are still keeping an eye out though.

This isn’t the Pit, so I’ll just ask you this, carnivorousplant.

Do you think it’s responsible behavior for cat owners to let their cats be “outside cats”?

Does Jane D’oh!'s experience alter your opinion in any way?

My cats are indoor/outdoor cats. Given my location is a pretty rural area, mainly surrounded by horse properties, I do feel that allowing my cats outside is appropriate.
I do not feel that it would be appropriate to have a cat be indoor/outdoor in a urban neighborhood, simply because it would be too dangerous for the animal.
If one of my animals was guilty of an UNPREVOKED attack, I would feel, however awful to contemplate, that it would be my responsibility to have the animal put down, or to be declawed and made a permanent in-home only resident, depending on the severity of the attack.

This made for an interesting visual.

I saw an outside cat a few days ago on my morning jog. I’ve been unable to post about it until now.

Warning: description of graphic harm to an animal.

It was still dark outside and very quiet. I heard a gasping noise and saw in the street a panting cat half crushed by a car. I went over to help it, and saw that it was beyond helping. I ran home, crying all the way, and Mr. Pug opened the front door to find his wife sobbing hysterically on the front porch. I tried to look up animal control in the Yellow Pages, by while I was doing so, a patrol car went up the street and stopped next to the cat and we saw that the policeman was taking care of the matter. I suppose he took it to be put down (I hope). The cat was a plump, pretty house cat, somebody’s beloved pet.

Sorry for the downer posting, but I had to point out what can happen to outside cats, not that I’m lecturing. It’s still hard to write about it.

oh pugluvr, that’s so awful.

My Dad had a cat that he used to let go outside. One day he noticed the cat had been gone for quite a while, and wouldnt come when he called (he usually did, really). The next morning on his way to work, Dad saw him in the road.

When he told me his kitty got hit, I said: Are ya sure? Maybe Tiger was just takin a nap.

Says Dad: Well, kitties don’t usually take their brains out when they take naps.

He’s a smartarse, but I know he was very sad about it. Keep those kitties INSIDE!!!

Owners of outside cats should know that cars are a danger, it’s Murphy’s Law coming on full force.

1 outside cat dies every ten seconds-ish (umm, no real statistical info, just know what owning an outside cat is like and it’s a guesstimate from seeing carstruck cats everywhere).

I feel bad for those pet owners who lose a pet to a car but it IS a given after so many years. I have always tried keeping my cats indoors as much as I can but… the lil’ darlings WILL do as they please and somehow get out.

As for a cat attacking people walking their pets, the owner should be made aware (if applicable) and pay for medical treatment, same thing as having another dog attack. It’s what’s right, IMO.

do you mean too dangerous for the cat or for other animals which normally live outside. Our next door neighbors had several bird feeders and a bird house in their back yard. everything was fine until the cat from next door came into their yard.

It systematically killed every bird that came to the bird feeders and then killed the family of birds that were living in the bird house.

Now, the cat didn’t eat any of the birds, it just killed them.

I don’t know of any animal outside of humans/chimps that does that.

You wouldn’t get a dog doing that.

The birds weren’t threatening the cat. they weren’t in the cats territory.

Would you consider that an unprovoked attack?
