When Did Bars Stop Offering "Free Lunches"?

There were a couple of bars in Anchorage back in the late 70s that had a fairly substantial free lunch going. They kept me going during some lean times. I made it a point to spend money in these places when I had it as payback. They remembered me and didn’t mind when I made a day’s rations out of a lunchtime sandwich ala Bumstead.

Well, Denver in the 60s, I understand, required bars in areas frequented by homeless people (bums) to serve one full meal a day (or was it urban legend?)

Also, Colorado used to required any establishment receiving a liquor license (no beer or wine bars in Colorado) to serve food. I’m not sure whether the law has changed, or not, but if it hasn’t, it sure has been relaxed. There are many fossilized bags of Cheetos hanging on many bars in Colorado now.

Around here (Houston), I see several (rather sketchy-looking, at least from the outside) strip clubs that say “free lunch buffet!” or “free steak dinner!”. I’m not sure who’d be crazy enough to eat it, though.

There is a bar behind the Alamo compound that all the downtown restaurant/hotel service people used to hang out at after work. They would have a buffet table with sandwiches and chips starting around 10:00pm and you wouldn’t even have to buy anything. I felt a little guilty eating eating them, since I didn’t work downtown, so I would just eat one
