When did European hotels first have en-suite rooms?

For those of you thinking of coming to the UK and staying in Bed and Breakfast establishments rather than hotels, I can tell you that the majority these days have en-suite rooms, although there may also be some smaller rooms with shared facilities.

I don’t mind it myself. I’d rather have more money for exploring and carry my supplies down the hall to shower than spend money on a private bath. I’ve tried looking for that sort of accommodation, but I keep getting redirected to very twee and very expensive bed and breakfasts. NOT what I’m looking for.

When we were in Germany in the 70’s (ok, when we were in West Germany in the 70’s), we stayed in several pubs with rooms over them. I’m hoping to find something more like that and less like A) the Hilton Americano with ice in every room, and B) Ye Olde British Touriste Trappe.
