When Did "Going to the Movies" Change to "Going to a Movie"?

http://www.61-driveintheatre.com/ is our closest drive-in. I remember going to it in the 70s with my siblings. Then i grew up and took my kids there. It has changed a bit: no more grilling allowed, no pets allowed and no smoking (except inside your car). It also went from having the speaker to attached to your window to running a radio (whether your car’s or a boombox). You can still bring a cooler with the beverage of your choice.

It always plays a double feature: a kid show and then an adult show (but not an Adult show  ). Which means tons of little kids running around for the first show. After the 15 minute Intermission and the second show starting they are so worn out you can turn the radio down and hear the dialogue.

I saw a double-feature in the 1989, the only time I ever did. It was Honey I Shrunk the Kids and something else I forgot. A “not new” movie. A cartoon, but I forget what.

I think the real question here is: When Did “Going to the Movies” change to “Going to See an Endless Stream of Trailers Interspersed with Infantilsing Animated Civics Lessons, and Playing Cellphone-Based On-Screen Trivia Games on Topics More Closely Related to Vacuous Teen Culture than Film Until You Actually Forget Which Film You Paid To See”?
