When did infinity pools become a 'thing'?

I wrote an article about a home builder in 1987 and one of the things he emphasized was that a lot of his custom homes included an “infinity lip pool.” I had never heard about this, so part of my story was explaining what this meant.

So, pre-1987, they were a thing, but they were a pretty new thing at that time.

What, they’re afraid they’ll get wet?

Swimmers at Infinity London will no doubt suffer the same fate as these tourists at Marina Bay Sands in Singapore, currently the world’s largest infinity pool, and be forced to swim in the rain.
