# When did the American Empire begin

I missed this quote earlier. How can you state “freed” and still account for the period between 1898 and 1946? [1. United States/Philippines (1898-1946)](https://uca.edu/politicalscience/home/research-projects/dadm-project/asiapacific-region/united-statesphilippines-1898-1946/) . I don’t think you can be considered “free” when you’re fighting a multi-year war with your liberator and have to wait nearly fifty years beween “freedom” and independence.
