There’s always been a rule in my family that you don’t bring a date to Christmas/Thanksgiving/SuperBowl Sunday unless it’s serious. I didn’t introduce my dates to my kids until they were keepers and didn’t have the man around a lot until he was headed for stepdaddy-ville. ---

I see my parents all the time, so any guy I was with would probably end up meeting them pretty quickly. I don’t get the big deal about introducing men I’m dating to my folks, and don’t consider it a “rite of passage” or any such thing. Anyone who is going to be freaked out by how much time I spend with my family probably ought to know up front. However, I probably wouldn’t invite him to an extended family occasion for quite a while, though it would depend on the guy and the occasion to decide how long I’d wait. ---

I introduced **Bonzer** to my brother after **Bonzer** and I had been dating for about 8/9 months or so; I was going to be sharing a house with the brother, so it seemed sensible. **Bonzer** didn’t meet my parents till March/April 2006, about 2.5 years since we’d started seeing each other. Part of the reason for this was that my parents’ families are a bit old fashioned and set in their ways and for me to be going out with/dating/whatever someone from ‘outside’ the community is a big big deal. So it was harder than “Hi mum, dad, this is **Bonzer** , we’re seeing each other”. Fortunately my parents love **Bonzer** to bits, which makes things a lot easier. ---

None of my SOs have met my family, since I’ve always had them when The Relatives were an ocean away. I met the family of one of them in our second date (he lived with his sister) and the family of another after a couple of months. My cousin has been for years with a guy I haven’t met. Mom tells me he’s “ugly and very nice”. I understand Coz didn’t introduce him to the grandparents until they’d been together for a year or so; he’s diabetic and doesn’t eat out at all, plus she was sure that Grandma’s reaction would be “ohmyGodhe’ssougly!”, which it was. The previous bf was pretty and a complete idiot (one of those guys who expect every woman to pick up after him, on the basis that his eggs hang on the outside\*), she brought him over for the first time after a few weeks and they were together for years. \*this expression is from a male coworker of mine who hates sexists with a burn-at-the-stake passion.
