When have you had to call 911?

Handy: you can call 911 with a tty. you may want to double check this for your area, but at the police station where im a dispatcher/911 operator when we get a call from a tty we talk to a person from Texas Relay who tells us what you are typing and types back any questions we may have for them. as for test calls, ask your local police staion to give you the number they have for people to make test calls and also to check to make sure their 911 info is accurate on the computer screen.
i have about a million things i want to add saying “this is the best way to do this” or “never do this when calling 911!” etc, but…ive got to drag my ass back to work for another long shift (was 13 last night, would have been 16 except a day worker came in a couple hours early-anyway, this isnt the pit so…LOL)

Sounds like anxiety. I’ve had it a few times (not that bad, though) and know of others who have called 911 repeatedly for that.

The last time I called it was after my ex flipped out at attacked me. I must admit it gave me a certain satisfaction.

once in college we had a fire on the stove. grease spilled down a burner and caught fire. Under the stovetop caught fire. I put pan lids on the burners but it was not enough to cut off air to the fire and the flames climbed higher. We all evacuated and went downstairs and tried to call from a neighbors home. We found you could not call 911 from a campus phone. I called 911, 9 911, and neither worked. it had been disabled somehow.

Fortunately the fire died out and only the stove needed to be replaced.

Ive called 911 threetimes in my life:

The first is when my sister decided to become a crack addict. She ran off with her boyfriend and took her car that was in my dad’s name. The problem was that she stopped paying the payments. She also stole my T.V., my clothes, and all my saved money for college. Anyways, she showed back up at the house when I was home alone. She had a warrant out for her arrest, so I called 911 when she showed up. She ended up stealing my brother’s clothes and money and then left. The problem was that no one showed up at my house for 45 minutes. I live in between two cities and both the cities wouldn’t take the call. I had to wait until a county police officer showed up. She was long gone by then
[hijack] the good thing is, she got arrested, stritened out, and now I have a wondeful little nephew to cherish. Her ex has been in jail for 2 1/2 years now:) [/hijack]

The second time was when I paged my fiance on his beeper I hit 911, before I dialed the number and then the police showed up and had to check things out. I felt soooo bad.

The third time was about 5 weeks ago. Florida has been on fire for the past few months. They had put out a fire near my sis’s apartment complex. When I came to drive her to work at 5:00am (aren’t I a good sister:)) there was smoke rising from the area again. I called them and the fire dept. came and put it out again.

I have had to call 911 just once. A car came flying up our rural road and missed the turn, it ended up rolling over in a pear orchard with the people in it thrown out. The sheriff, fire department and ambulances arrived to treat the passengers. Come to find out, the kids in the car were underage to drive and had taken it from one of their parents on a lark. Thankfully none of them were seriously injured.

When my friend OD’ed in my living room.
:frowning: He didn’t make it. :frowning:

Normally I would think that, even though I’ve never been one to have full-blown panic attacks, but I WOKE UP like that. Not even from a nightmare, either. One does not generally wake up with a heart rate of 165 bpm. At least, I hope not.

everyone forget that i ever said i knew anything abou this LOL i thought handy was talking about the equipment deaf people use on the telephone and then when i got to work i realized that equip is tdd or something (cant remember the initials for it now!) …soooo, not sure exactly what handy is refering to…can someone give me a clue?

Handy is referring to the equipment deaf people use to enable them to use the phone. Yes, there is TDD–Telecommunications Device for the Deaf–but there is also TYY/TTY: Teletypewriter.

Meanwhile…wow, gang, this is quite an assortment of tales. DB, I’ve had some anxiety attacks before and have actually had a couple of ambulance rides as a result of them. But if you didn’t feel anxious or scared, it probably wasn’t an anxiety attack, huh.

I almost had to call 911 yesterday; several others did in my place. I was at a local farmers’ market when a young girl ran a red light, trying to make a left turn, and got T-boned by a BMW. Both drivers seemed okay; there was no immediate sign of injury, but obviously 911 was called (by several of the venders).

Has anyone ever had this problem? When I was in a car accident two years ago, the first few times I called 911 it was busy. Sheesh!

When my neighbor died. :frowning:

His son came across the street at 7 am and said he thought his dad was dead. (Why he didn’t call 911 himself, I don’t know. Think he was in a panic.) My hubby went over and I followed as soon as I got clothes on. Yeah, he was dead. His wife wouldn’t let me use the phone to call 911 because she was trying to reach her older son to let him know. (Again, panic.) So I went home and called from my house.

This man was like a father to my husband. He’d lived across the street from him pretty much since he was about 4 or 5. Two weeks previously, my hubby had lost his father to lung cancer. It was like loosing 2 dads in two weeks.

Losing, dammit.
