# When is Trump's last date for filing for re-election?

When is Trump’s last date for filing for re-election?
Your Primaries start early next year, don’t they? So by when does Trump actually have to formally put his name forward?

In most (all?) of the States, the state governments run the primaries. The states that have caucuses are run and paid for by the parties. Other than filing fees, I don’t know of any other payments required by candidates in either case.

Apparently there is a [filing fee](https://ballotpedia.org/Ballot_access_requirements_for_presidential_candidates_in_Vermont) to be on the primary ballot in at least some states. Vermont says $2,000 where the [filing deadline](https://www.sec.state.vt.us/elections/candidates/presidential-candidates.aspx) is December 16, 2019. Normally the filing deadline in Vermont is December 15 but that is a Sunday this year and state law provides that the deadline be extended to the next business day if the 15th falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or public holiday.
Amount of filing fee and deadline filing date may vary considerably from state to state. Some states may defer to political parties as does [South Carolina](https://www.scvotes.org/filing-president).

Trump’s campaign organization writes all the checks. Candidates don’t personally for anything unless they’re self-funding their campaigns.

Technically all that matters is the delegate vote at the GOP convention and since he has no real opposition now that vote will be a mere formality.

He still needs to file the papers in the 50 states and DC to be on the ballot. Getting nominated by the GOP convention doesn’t get him on the ballot.
