I had an employer that insisted I initial paperwork with my first initial and the first two letters of my last name! 
I guess that would make it a bit easier to figure out who did the initialling, but they did have signature cards which we had to sign and “initial” in that fashion, so they could have let people initial things properly and looked at the signature cards if there was any issue (it wasn’t that big a company).
I found it very weird “initialing” paperwork that way.
