I’ve been on peritoneal dialysis for four years. I had to have my catheter removed during a bout of peritonitis and went onto haemodialysis. It was so bad that I had the IJ access removed and went without dialysis for five weeks until I could have another Tenkoff inserted. If, for some reason I couldn’t continue with PD, that would be it for me too.
I have previously been on the transplant list in NZ and waited for the phone call with dread. I think I probably would have refused had they called me but thankfully I didn’t have to make that choice. I don’t have diabetes but I do have other health issues and have previously had bad reactions to the anti rejection drugs used early in my treatment. The thought of having those for the rest of my life is not something I’d look forward to, new kidney or no.
