As for this, I’ll let people judge for themselves.

GD moderator Jonathon Chance defines the “liar” rule as follows. Some people have disagreed with his definition, but this is the rule as it currently stands.

And here is Tom’s post that I reported:

> [@Does Islam drive homophobic violence?](https://boards.straightdope.com/t/does-islam-drive-homophobic-violence/757202/718):
>
> Your argument gains no ground when you deliberately misread what I have posted. I did not claim that you said that only Islam can have problems. I responded to your claim, reiterated constantly, that the problems of Islam are directly traceable to the fact that Mohammed had a violent history. You do say that, constantly. You also deliberately ignore the fact that you often quote hadiths written long after Mohammed died when claiming that Mohammed “said” something and you deliberately ignore the many years that Islam was less hateful than other religions, pretending that the hatred we see, today, (that originates with the interpretations of a specific sect within Islam, and not with its scripture), is inherent in the religion in order to incorrectly claim that the display of hatred has always been an aspect of Islam.

These four phrases appear to my eye to be accusations of deliberate untruth.

- "you deliberately misread "
- "You deliberately ignore " (twice)
- “pretending”
And lets look at some things Tom has decided as breaking the rule :
“[make these things up](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?p=18619165&highlight=lying#post18619165)”
“[fabrication](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?p=18056902&highlight=lying#post18056902)”
"[I don’t believe the anecdote"](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?p=17512949&highlight=lying#post17512949)
“[mendacious](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?p=17501599&highlight=lying#post17501599)”

What’s the difference between “pretending” and “making things up” then?
