At the bottom of each and every post on the SDMB, there is a little button that says ‘reply’. It’s not big. You might miss it, if you’re not careful. If you would like to quote another poster and reply, click that button. But, if you must snip out parts of that quote, _ **leave the poster’s name** _. It can get very confusing while reading a debate, and seeing things such as: > [@](#): > > blah blah blah without knowing who said it. It’s time consuming and annoying to go back through the thread to try to find who said what. It’s really very easy to code by hand if you don’t want to use the button! It’s really simple! Look! \blah blah blah\ (replacing the \<\> with ). This works for when you’re replying to more than one other poster in one reply. Honest. If you don’t want to do either, than use the Guided Mode available when you post a reply to a thread. It’s EASY. Really. Some of you have been here for five years and still don’t know how to do it. This isn’t really all that difficult. Please, use the button, or learn how to code. It’s one of the first things I learned to do when I joined up - and if I can learn, so can you. ---

Showoff! _grumble grumble_ In all seriousness, though, I agree with **Ginger**. It’s annoying when people quote a lengthy OP in its entirety when they’re only responding to a part of it. There was another pit thread about this a few months ago, I think. ---

Along with giving **Q.E.D.** a hard time, I should have mentioned that I agree with **GingerOfTheNorth** absolutely! Most especially when more than one poster is being replied to. It’s extremely confusing. ---

I suspect it happens mainly for two reasons: -They are quoting what is (at the point of composition) the last post in tht thread, assuming that their reply will appear directly after it (like I’m assuming this one will) -They are constructing the quote tags manually and C&P ing the quoted text, as I have done here (perhaps because they hit the ‘reply to thread’, rather than ‘reply to post’ button, then realised they wanted to quote someone). ---

So the people that quote multiple people in a post are not just clicking buttons, but rather typing code? I thought there was a shortcut. It’s cool to know that I can make stuff up now though.
