When was the last time you changed a tire?

This morning I took off one wheel to check the rotor thickness. I’ll be pulling all four later this afternoon when I change the pads shims and rotors. Does that count?

I’ll be putting snow tires on the accord pretty soon as well.

Happened to me just last week. Ironically enough, I hit a spare tire that had fallen off another vehicle on I-90 in the passing lane It was nighttime and I didn’t see it early enough to change lanes. Completely exploded my own front passenger tire. Managed to pull over to the median and changed to the spare doughnut in about 15 mins. First time I ever used it in this car and the doughnut had barely enough pressure to be usable. A cop was nice enough to stop behind me with his spotlight, and I was on my way, directly to the nearest gas station to properly inflate the spare, of course!

About 6 months ago I almost changed a tire. My wife called, she had a flat tire. I drove to meet her, got all the junk out of the trunk and took the hub caps off. Then I found out there were plastic caps on the nuts and the wife didn’t have the special tool needed to pull off them off. So, in the dark, I fashioned a piece of wire from my car into a tool that would work. When I got those off and tried to loosen the nuts I discovered that she has a special nut that requires still another special tool, a tool she also did not have. Much stomping and cussing ensued. We eventually had the car towed to the dealer to get the damned special nuts replaced and, while they were at it, they gave her all new tires because they were under warranty.

Had a blown out sidewall over the summer and had to put on the donut to make it to the shop.

Otherwise a handful of times over the last 10 years. Most of the time no problem, except once i couldn’t get the wheel off the hub and had to give it about 3 swift kicks with my heel to loosen it up.

Though i will admit that sketchy little jack that comes with your car always kind of freaks me out a little. Would be nice to be able to keep a big floor jack in the trunk, but those things weigh a ton.

About three months ago. My wife’s PT Cruiser woke up with a flat one morning. She took the Jag to work and I changed the tire all by myself. I was so proud of myself.

Bolding mine. They make aluminum floor jacks. You can buy them from Amazon or the local NAPA store. Harbor Freight has one for $90.00 on sale right now. It weighs in at 27 lbs. I do not know about the quality of this one though. The NAPA ones are of good quality. I had one on my service truck for over five years. It never let me down.

IHTH, 48.

Or if space is an issue, bring a bottle jack and a piece of wood to widen the base.

About a month ago. Doing about 120 km/h (75 mph) on the highway with the family in the car. Rear tyre which had plenty of tread and was properly inflated exploded - no idea why. Put the spare on and we continued home.

Before that was probably four or so years ago, and much less dramatic.

Counts 10x.

A few years ago, when I got a flat on the highway north of Lake Superior, between Terrace Bay and Marathon. See my account here.

That’s the stretch where I had the two flats at the same time in the bush, and where my previous vehicle gave up the ghost at a trailhead.
