Just peeled the nail off of my left big toe a few minutes ago and I took pictures! I’m a runner, and from time to time a long run and a new pair of shoes join forces to blacken a toenail. At that point it’s not a matter of _if_ it’s going to come off; it’s a matter of _when_. The glorious event has been a few weeks in coming, with it getting looser and looser with each passing day, like a loose tooth. Once I saw it was ready to go, I reached for the camera and then finished the job. I showed it to our teenagers – they responded appropriately. How about you? When was the last time you lost a toenail? ---

I’ve got the one on my right big toe growing back right now… I lost it about 3 months ago, so it is almost fully grown back now. I lost it when the glass door from my oven fell of and landed on it - twice within the space of 10 minutes! ---

I had the sides of my big toenails removed (and the “roots” cauterized) a couple of years ago, after suffering from ingrown nails for awhile. I’m told that one of the ingrowns they had to remove was “as big as a guitar pick,” but I didn’t see it myself. I’m willing to concede that it may have been _half_ as large as a guitar pick. It was not a fun time, for me. ---

I never lost a toenail, but once I slammed the car door on my sister’s foot and she lost a toenail. I thought she was going to get out on the other side. ---

I’m not looking at pictures or videos, because I lost a toenail when I was a little kid. I pulled a cabinet over on myself (swinging on the door…not too bright) and bashed the FUCK! outta my foot. Suffice to say it’s ugly. And painful. And the re-grow is kind of gross too. ---

Some 30 years ago, when I was about 11, I opened the freezer, and a _huge_ frozen solid roast fell on my right foot. It was the first time I ever cussed in front of my mom! Anyway, net result was that, later that summer, the toenail fell off while I was in the swimming pool. The best part about it was that my sister, two years older than me, was _totally_ skeeved out by the thought of a _disembodied toenail_ floating around in the pool, and wouldn’t swim in it for about a week! ---

I think the 15mi I ran on Sunday simply urged it along its way. I much prefer to lose toenails this way: it doesn’t hurt at all! Unfortunate souls like **Kalhoun** , **Iguana Boy** , and **Lillith Fair** ’s sister lose them after traumatic bashings that make them turn black and cause excruciating unbearable throbbing pain. In sharp contrast, when I get them, I simply notice a tight spot in the shoe after several miles, get home and note the toenail is looking bruised and think “Hmmmm… I wonder if I’m going to lose that one.” A month or so later I get my answer. No pain involved! ---

The one I lost has did grow back, but it’s never been the same. It seems “detached” from the toe at the top of the nail bed. I agree with the no pics thing.
