When was the last time you used High Beams?

Every morning recently as I go to work at 6am. Two lane mountain roads. Very few cars on it for the first 12 miles. I usually see a half dozen or so. Sometimes more, sometimes none.

If visibility is bad, like fog or heavy snow, high-beams don’t help and tend to blind you. If it’s just dark, they can help you spot the family of deer just about to cross the road.

I ride a motorcycle, and I engage in the California custom of lane-splitting. I want to make myself as visible as possible.

I shall also use my high beams tonight, as I’m visiting a friend who lives waaaay out on a farm. I have several friends like that, come to think of it–but I don’t usually visit them at night, they come in to town instead.

Perhaps in February, when I was on back roads in New Mexico.

I don’t use them around town here; too much traffic.

Last month I took a road trip to Ohio, and didn’t use my high beams even once. Again, too much traffic on the freeways now.

Usually I only use mine a few times a year when I’m on the highways outside Sydney. I had probably not used them in Sydney for years until about two weeks ago. I was driving down a bit of the Great Western Highway that is reasonably, but not brightly, lit and thought I could see something ahead in my lane but I wasn’t sure. I flashed my high beams to spot a guy in dark clothing on a bicycle with no light talking on his phone while riding. Idiot.

Meh - I live 49.7 miles from east hartford where I work, and that is using rt 2 and segueing off onto 66 for a banzai run through Willimantic to cut off about 9 miles…

I use ihighs pretty much any time I am out after dark. The closest thing to a street light near us is the jackass who seem s to think his over the garage door light needs to be bright enough to land a 747. Did I mention it is aimed at the road just as you go into a blind curve? If the jerk didnt have small children there would be weekly or nightly blasting of the light bulb with a .22 for the safety of the eyes of people trying to make it around the curve without landing in our pile of rocks that used to be a fence before he put the light up.

I use mine every morning on the way home from work in Panama City (4 am). It’s rural all the way to Vernon, with very little traffic. Sometimes its only necessary to dim them once or twice for oncoming traffic. As others have said, they make a big difference in deer and critter avoidance. I like the headlights on my new car - they are bright enough to knock a dog off a meatwagon.

That was you?

Last night, coming home from the airport.

The route I took passes through an area with no street lights, winding roads, and wandering wildlife. More light seemed like a good idea.

Almost every morning, as I start work early.
Oddly, I also work at an airport, & there’s a side road I use to avoid traffic. It is poorly lit, & has deer, skunks & other examples of Og"s Blessed Cute Furry Little Vermin™ running around.
Curiously, I don’t want to ram them.

10 minutes ago on my drive home. It is a rare night drive when I don’t need them.

A month or so ago, on a lonely trip from Lake Placid to Bartow on US-27, in rural-Jesus-where-the-hell-is-everybody backwoods Florida.

Probably the same road Shibb used his on. In the area that he and I and LunaV live, there just isn’t much call for them.

Mine were on tonight, it was really cold outside.

Wait, what?

Every night. In fact, half an hour ago. I flash people, I use them to see, they’re very handy. Much less invasive than a horn blast.

Yesterday. It was dark and foggy but the high beams worked better than the low because of where the fog was floating (it was hugging the road). I live in a part of the country that is not brightly lit, even in many urban areas, foggy, and gets little star- or moonlight.

Last week, I drove from NYC to Syracuse at night, then from Niagara Falls to Detroit at night, then from Detroit to Cleveland at night, and finally, from Cleveland back to NYC at night. Brights were on probably 95% of the time on those drives.

I use them quite often at night when I’m driving, especially on the highways. There’s one stretch of road I tend not to use them though, as it’s more densely populated (more streetlights) and there’s more traffic, meaning I’m often turning them off anyways. I don’t need them much through there. But I live in a rural area, so generally if it’s dark I have them on.

By the way, nice rims!

You know you two have been initiated into some sort of gang, right?

I use mine all the time, as I am in the country with few street lights. Unfortunately there are a few lights near my house (can’t see the stars as clearly  ) but for most of the drive I need them. Helps me see critters’ eyes before they emerge from the woods, or their bodies after they do. And I hope it will help me spot moose on the highway (low beams just go under them).
