I don’t practice any technique designed for shooting people, but I can get two rounds out of either of my Webley revolvers almost as fast as I can get two rounds out of a semi-auto, FWIW.
I’m really not an expert, and you don’t have to shoot that much to be proficient. But you need to shoot that much to justify your John Wayne fantasies (“I only need one bullet, I can put it right between the eyes at 100 yards!”) and be confident in that situation. (But you also simply need to be able to staying calm in stressful situations.) And it’s not just sending rounds down-range, but practical drills.
I haven’t shot pistols in a while, although I’m pretty proficient. I have little doubt I’d account myself well in a gun fight if it were necesary. But I don’t go around claiming “More than X bullets is for sissies. Hell, I’d only need 3 shots if I was shooting with my dick! And that’s only because my balls don’t make the most stable bench rest”
