Friend of mine in her 20’s. Bemoaning the fact that she can NOT find an adult woman’s costume of any type that isn’t totally slutty. Snow White? Mini skirt. Nurse? Slutty. She can’t find a decent supplier of costumes that are not hundreds of dollars, and are also not slutty. Thoughts? Sources? Cartooniverse ---

I’ve been annoyed about this for a long time. Every costume ad in our local papers shows the same thing–all the women’s costumes are sexy/slutty, while the men’s costumes look normal. Men? Vampire. Women? Slutty vampire in short skirt and plunging neckline. Men? Policeman. Women? Short shorts, high boots, and low-cut top. Men? Pirate. Women? miniskirt, plunging neckline, and thigh-high boots. It’s damned frustrating for those of us who’d like to have something non-slutty. Does your friend like Harry Potter at all, **Cartooniverse**? Alivan’s has some great Hogwarts school uniforms in various price ranges. Long shot, I know, but it’s one of the few non-homemade things I’ve seen that’s not R-rated. ---

I used [www.buycostumes.com](http://www.buycostumes.com) last year and found a non-slutty nun costume. They of course have more slutty than non-slutty costumes, but there’s plenty non-slutty and unisex costumes to choose from. ---

I would go for homemade if you can (as in, see what you can throw together). Copy the outfits worn on Mythbusters and take some duct tape and a road flare made to look like dynamite. Grab a white lab coat and a dozen test tubes and qtips and ask everyone for DNA samples as a CSI actor. I’ve had a long standing policy that I refuse to wear a Halloween costume that ends up with me being cold all night. Halloween is freakin’ cold, and I hope to be out and about till the AM. No way am I wearing a miniskirt. I’ve found my best luck is going to thrift stores and putting together an outfit. You’d be surprised what kind of crazy stuff you can find there, and how appropriate it can be. ---

Don’t know, don’t care. C’mon, ladies! It’s the one time of the year you can dress like a slut and it’s ok! Sure, dress like a slut on Thanksgiving and it’s a might tacky, but on Halloween? Slut it up, slut it out, slut it every which way you can! ---

You don’t have to learn to sew. Go to a thrift store or a vintage clothing store and piece something together. Be a grandma, a nurse, Rosie the Riveter, an archeologist, Lizzie Borden, Betsey Ross, the Carol Burnet cleaning lady, a high school gym teacher. . . One person’s ordinary clothes can be another person’s “costume.” ---

My sister is throwing a Halloween party this year. I’m thinking of just throwing together a cat costume by wearing the cat ears and collar I wore to AX with whatever black clothes I can find. That way I can be a black cat without entering “slutty black cat” territory. Slutty whatever is the least original costume option ever. It drives me nuts. What’s wrong with being creative and clever instead of going for “oh I’ll be a princess with my tits hanging out.” Lame. Anyway, yes, I agree about thrift stores. Great places to find fun costume pieces that aren’t at all expensive. Me, I’ve recently gone as: - a newlydead (with my huz, the first Halloween after we got married)–very easy costume - a cheerleader (totally nonslutty, I might add) - a witch (also nonslutty, and I won a costume contest for it) - this year, a freshly-made vampire (fangs, pale makeup, punture marks in neck–as a bonus, complain about not feeling well and when people ask what’s wrong say “I just feel drained.”). I love Halloween. ---

I love holiday costumes. Last year I was easter bunny (you buy those cheap baskets and chocolate bunnies and straw and keep til halloween!) and this year Mrs. Santa, a santa cap is only $4 and just a red outfit will do fine. ---

Where are you people going for your costumes? I’ve been to many costume shops and on-line stores. While the sexy/slutty costumes outnumber the non-sexy, I still see plenty of not outrageously slutty female costumes. Of course, I’d like to see more sexy costumes. Halloween seems to be becoming our Carneval. But I usually don’t see a lot of it. Most women I know don’t go for the extremely sexy costumes. ---

For recent years: Dark Angel of Death (non slutty, and a giant sword!) Lulu from FFX (a little slutty, but not too bad) Mother Nature (non-slutty) Zorro (also non slutty) Mainstream costume stores have non-slutty costumes, but not usually in the women’s section. ---

Thank you! This drives me nuts at this time of year. A few years ago, Halloween costumes were about not minding looking silly - now, for women, they seem to be about looking as slutty and showing as much flesh as possible. The whole point of Halloween is to have a laugh and not take yourself seriously, not to show off how hot you think you are. Cartooniverse - I’ve always made my own Halloween costumes, even though I can’t sew, it just takes a bit of imagination and a warped sense of humour :). Here’s been a few of me and my friends’ recent ones: –jeans, normal top, white coat, slices of bread stapled to it (breadman) –same costume, only with empty milk cartons (milkman) –black jeans, stripey blue and white top, beret, string of onions, loads of fake blood on face (bloody foreigner) –habit-type cloak/dress, blue headscarf, loads of fake blood on face (Bloody Mary) –and, er - white trews, white sweater, white hair and face, blue cord around neck (tampon). \* \*What?
