Where are the new dollar coins?

This has been my experience here; put a $20 bill in a SEPTA ticket machine for a $4 train ticket and you may well get 16 Sackies (maybe Suzies mixed in) change… ugh.

I imagine a small part of the reason you don’t see more of them is that individuals take them out of circulation as novelties to be saved. It probably doesn’t help any that a lot of cash registers don’t have a dedicated slot to keep them.

Not to mention that basically all living Americans grew up with the paper dollar as “real” money from a cultural standpoint.

I have a cash register with an open slot for any odd coins I get – dollars, fifty cent pieces (hadn’t seen one of those in years until I got this job), whatevers. As long as it’s legal, I’ll take it.

It doesn’t seem to be necessary, since in France, 10 FF and 20 FF (roughly worth $ 1.5 and $3) bills and coins circulated at the same time for many years. People used both, and it never was an issue.

Rural western Kansas? Like there’s an urban western Kansas? Seriously, though, don’t you guys still have nickel Pepsi machines?
At one of my client’s offices the sandwich vending machines in the break room take dollar coins as do most all beverage machines I’ve seen or worked on (non-professionally). I’ve even seen them in video games over the years. I remember playing a Space Invaders pinball machine in about 1981 that gave five plays for a SusieB or one for a quarter. And that was in the grand metropolis of McLoud, Oklahoma (granted, it’s only about 25 miles from OKC).

Unlikely, as those are only worth a nickel. Now if it has the Signing of the Declaration of Independence on the back, then I’m sure they’d be more appreciative.

Maybe, but some of those are only worth a penny…

Oddly, they’re quite common here in Hawaii. I say “oddly” because we always seem to be the LAST ones to see the new currencies, and even the new state quarters, but the nickels are plentiful. Go figure.

I’ve seen a tarnished Sackie. They take on a dull bronze look, and start to bear a strong resemblance to the tokens that some arcades use. In fact, when I got this coin out of the stamp machine (which is the only place you’ll ever see one around here) I almost threw it away, thinking I’d been given a slug.

The $2 US banknote before the re-design in 1976 has Monticello on the back. We currently buy these in any condition from the public for $4 each. The 1976 design(Federal REserve Note) has no extra value at this point.

There is a proposal out there for yet another dollar coin. The idea for this one was inspired by the state quarters. This is a good idea that may actually work.

The new dollar coins would have the face of a president on it starting with Washington working their way through to Dubya or whomever follows. They would release a new one every three months.

Interestingly, they’d get to Clinton and Dubya in 2018 or so. They’d be in their early 70’s and could well be still alive. They would be the first living people to be on a U.S. coin.

Maybe on a “curculating” coin, but

There’s about half a zillion (conservative estimate) pictures of TJ with the Monticello on the back in circulation and 99.999999… % of them are only worth 5 cents.
