Hubby and I love onion bagels, but lately they seem to have become an endangered species. They have been MIA from the bread section for about the past 6 months, at least that I’ve noticed. The only ones I can find in the stores now are Lenders in the refrigerated section. I don’t care for those because they have an odd refrigerated taste. Anyway, has anyone else noticed this phenomenon or is there just not enough demand in South Louisiana? ---

Lots in Chicago too. Is it only in the super market or can you not find them in bagel shops also? ---

Many groceries here have apparently stopped carrying the Thomas brand of onion bagel, which is a real shame. (In my opinion, Thomas is the only truly tasty supermarket brand bagel, so I don’t know whether there are onion bagels of other brands.) ---

I think the problem is that onion bagels are the most popular and if the store is particularly lame, they run out of them. I’ve been to a couple of stores lately that have NO onion bagels but about a gross of cinnamon blueberry bagels. Yuck! WTF, I only eat onion bagels! ---

Dunkin Donuts always has them, as do the bagel places around here. I don’t know about the supermarkets though. ---

We don’t have bagel shops around here unless you count NY Bagel Co. They are more of a sandwich company anyway. I wish we had Dunkin Donuts. I don’t think its a question of them running out. The shelves do not have gaping holes as if they sold out quick. And anyway, it couldn’t be true at all four of the stores I frequent. I would at least catch some every once in a while. No dice, though. I’m thinking people in Baton Rouge just don’t like them enough for the stores to carry them. I guess I could always call and ask. ---

It seems the bagels filed under “Garlic” in some big chains appear and taste more oniony than garlicy. Or maybe my tastebuds are shot. ---

The only choices we seem to have are plain, whole grain, blueberry, or cinnamon swirl. Albertson’s carries one that is called “Everything” which has a some onion in it, but not enough. I think it’s the Cobblestone Mill brand. No other store carries this flavor. I’m a savory girl. I don’t like the sweet crap. ---

Only partially off topic: At Einstein Bros this morning I ordered an everything bagel and got what looked like an everything bagel but which turned out to be a cinnamon raisin bagel that had been “everythinged.” It was weird but also kind of good. P.S. I miss Long Island bagels from Collegetown Bagels. ::sniffle:: ---

[/QUOTE] Hej. When I lived in Lafayette 25 years ago I don’t think I ever saw a bagel. Being from New York, the ones we have in Northern California are marginally acceptable, at least near me. Most of the good shops got taken over by people who wouldn’t know a decent bagel if it bit them. But I do agree that onion bagels are far superior. ---

You could always chop some onion and mix it into cream cheese and eat plain bagels. Not the same, of course, but if you’re desperate, it might be worth the try. I am fortunate to be living near an excellent bagel place; when we moved from NY to NJ we thought we’d have a tough time finding really really good bagels. But we can get the more unusual onion, garlic, and marble bagels pretty easily where we live. My 5-year-old is crazy about onion bagels. The 3-year-old enjoys his pumpernickel bagel with lox. 🙂 ---

Lots of onion bagels here in Portland. The “day-olds” I run across are generally either onion or cinnamon-raisin. ---

Not sure about bagels, but I’ve noticed that onion rolls are missing. I’ve looked in 3 grocery stores and they are just gone. No spot on the shelf…gone. (Typically they were Pepperidge farm hamburger shaped thingies) I know something is going on with bread. Autumn Grain is definitely different and it lasts for at least two weeks. It is wierd when you find a partial loaf stuck behind stuff that you know should be 14 shades of green and it looks perfect. As a side note, this isn’t the case with bread from the bakery, it still only lasts a few days. Maybe whatever magic they are working on bread these days doesn’t interact well with onions. ---

They have been missing in Richmond Virginia for what seems like a year now. March 2014. They are the best. We don’t have fresh bagel shops on ever corner here. I usually shop at Food Lion, Kroger or Martins and there are none to be found. I usually substitute Everything flavor but I really miss the Onion ones. I wondered if the onion version doesn’t keep as well since they aren’t frozen or refrigerated. I have yet to talk to a store manager but I think I will now that I see there are others suffering like me. ---

I’ve noticed this too. I live near lots of places that carry multiple flavors of bagels, but only one that carries onion bagels, my favorite. Kind of annoying. ---

You guys buy your onion bagels at a STORE? Humph. Why would you buy something you can make better and cheaper at home. I have special water flown in from NYC so I can make the perfectly chewy New York style bagel and I save literally dozens of cents a month. Sorry, figured a post like this was coming along at some point (Dopers Gotta Dope) so thought I’d get the ball rolling. ---

I just sprinkle some dried minced onion and a little garlic powder on top and spread cream cheese over that. Achieves the desired effect. ---
