Visualize the basic bell-shaped curve. Focus on the topmost point near the halfway point. That’s a picture of “average” that applies to this thread. Exactly half (minus one) of the universe is on one side and the other half (minus that same one) is on the other. If you want to quibble about “mean” and “median” and other synonyms for “average” please start you own thread for that puspose. This thread is about “average” in the sense above. So many threads seem to be about “the best” or “the worst” or “the greatest” or “the first” or some other attribute that applies to one or the other of the “tails” of the bell-shaped curve. This thread is about stuff “in the middle.” Think of all the bell-shaped curves that may apply to you. Height, weight, age, intelligence, attractiveness, sexiness, curiosity, fluency with some subject, ability in some skill, level of accomplishment in some endeavor, whatever you can think of where lots of other people are both “better than” or “worse than” you, or, better yet, to avoid the value judgment associated with “better” or “worse” just think of areas where you fit comfortably “in the middle of the pack.” What are some of those areas? Where are you unashamed of being “just average”? ---

I fall right into average, or in the general vicinity in many ways. Height- 5’9. Slightly lower than the “average” height of 5’10, but right on the top of the bell curve. Average “down there.” (TMI? you asked) Perhaps only slightly greater than average intelligence? I would say I am definitely in the first standard deviation. between 100 and 105 surely. I’d say most of what I do is pretty average. Nothing about me stands out above the rest. Nothing I have ever accomplished is “great,” and my insights (when I have them), are pretty plain. ---

Humm - my math skills are average. I think my driving is pretty average. My health is average. Mechanical abilities - I’m guessing average. I can fix a few things around the house, but I’m certainly not “handy”. Ditto for car repairs - I could change the oil if pressed, but that’s about it. Tidyness is average I think - I’m not a total slob, but the place gets sort of unruly once and a while. My hair is pretty average. I always wanted to have “great hair” but it’s just not in the cards. I’m not too bothered by this. I mean there are lots of areas where I’m above average, and lots of areas where I’m below average so I think I sort of break even, yano? ---

Physics and chemistry. I try hard and put a lot of effort into studying them, but in those subjects I am in the middle of the pack. So far I have made B’s for a final grade in those subjects since I do all the extra credit offered and such, but on exams its usually a C for me. ---

I tend to be a person of extremes so I don’t usually get lots of meh averages. My average abilities would include chemistry and some kinds of math. I don’t really like the feeling. I would rather be dead last than in the middle for some reason. ---

My height and weight are almost exactly 50th percentile. Nearly 5’10’’ and 160lbs. I’d go so far as to say I’m smarter than the average bear, but physically, I’m exactly in the middle. ---
