You’d probably like it where we are. We’ve got 36 acres in the middle of nowhere, NE AZ. About 2-1/2 miles from the paved highway, our own well, septic, and solar set-up.
Husband and I are transplants from SCal. This is like HEAVEN in comparison.

I think an important question that never came up in the thread is how much the OP is willing to spend. It may help if we get something like “$1000 including tax, title and license.”
Really?! That is SO cool. Easily the most appealing thing I’ve ever heard about AZ. Are there other free range states? We’re living in rural Maine right now, and it just amuses the hell out of me when I’m walking my dogs and one of the neighboring dairy cows has escaped, wandering around begging for treats. Cracks me up.
casdave, no, unless you’re trying to keep animals in or for privacy in a backyard, a great deal (I’d say most, but don’t know for sure) of property in the US is not fenced. Certainly most front yard areas aren’t fenced, at least out of major cities. I guess people could walk on your yard, and maybe in some areas it’s a problem, but not generally.
OK, done with the hijack. Taxes aren’t always a big issue. We own 40 acres right outside Little Rock, AR, and only pay about $60 a year in taxes on it, with roads, city water and everything. We recently considered buying another 300 acres a bit further out for $1600 an acre, but eventually decided not to. Beautiful area with good road access and water, but we didn’t want that much land and we had to buy all of it. So, yeah, buy in bulk for low prices.
