I’d argue that the extra seasoning is the point of a potato wedge, just a like a curly fry.

Same here. I’ve never seen potato wedges advertised as “steak fries”, though I know that there are always regional differences for restaurants. They’re like standard fries in terms of length and shape and the way they are cooked, except thicker.

They aren’t that hard to find, nor are wedges. At least for me. As @fedman1 points out, even Wendy’s sells potato wedges for breakfast (and I dig them).

> Today I Learned that “jojos” aren’t a Cleveland thing, they’re actually a PNW thing, but also randomly popular in Northeast Ohio and we all think they were invented here.

The only place where I’ve ever had jojos is at Albertson’s here in the PNW. They are breaded and fried with the same breading that they use for fried chicken, and I always loved them growing up.

KFC now makes fries that have their Original Recipe spices on them, and flavor-wise, they remind me of Albertson’s jojos (just really thin and not breaded).

Well, no. Wedges are, you know, shaped like actual wedges. There’s a curved part from the exterior of the potato and a straight part where the cut is made. Usually, they’re skin-on, in my experience, but I don’t think they have to be. Steak fries are thick fry slabs, different that wedges. Then there’s home fries, which are pan fried potato chunks. The more foodie or cosmopolitan of us may also know British chips and Belgian frites.

Exactly, we call them wedges because they are literally a wedge cut from a potato.

Maybe why I don’t like curly fries either.

I like my potatoes unspoiled. Don’t get me started on “loaded” potatoes.

Wedge fries are quite good. I prefer them to steak fries, especially when they come skin on. I don’t find them around a lot these days, either. We do them at home as baked potato wedges cooked in a good bit of butter and oil, but not quite the same as the deep-fried experience.

Shoestring fries, which are as thin as literal shoelaces.

They were a big thing at Convenient Food Mart here in Ohio, the ubiquitous convenience store that was around before gas station convenience stores really took off. Fried chicken & jojos.

A lot of local and regional pizza places still do them too.

They haven’t disappeared, just gone domestic.

I have a potato cutter that can make cuts from small (McDonald’s) to large (steak fries). They can be cut with or without skins. The only thing this gadget cannot make is shoestrings.

Seasoning is up to you.

Double deep frying (twice, with increasing temps) is recommended. Tastes great.

Oh, and the ones in the freezer section are actually pretty good. I got some of the Red Robin fries recently at the grocery store. Just put em in the air fryer and mmm mmm!

Oh, and looking at photos online of the chips one gets at London fish and chip shops, they look pretty close to my idea of ‘steak fries’. Is there a generally accepted style of chip served in the UK?

I used to buy Steak Fries in the frozen section at the grocery stores.

They were next to crinkle cut and hash browns.

Steak Fries are better if they’re cooked in oil. I have a Fry Daddy. The secret is cooking in small batches. Trying to cook a lot of fries at once cools the oil.

I rarely cook fries any more. I’m cutting back on fried foods.

The grocery still sells steak fries.

Fresh made would be better.

I haven’t seen a slicer that cuts potatoes into Steak Fries. I have one for regular fries. I can make thicker fries but they’re not exactly like the ones served at Steak restaurants.

I’ll just point out that, as discussed at length upthread, the term “steak fries” gets used for both the sort of fries which you are talking about, and what are also often called “potato wedges” (or “jojos”), and the OP clarified that what they are looking for is the latter.
