My wife got a Victorias Secret catalog this month and I looked through it and noticed that all the nipples (and various other body parts) have apparently been censored digitally. If you have the catalog, look on page 9. The woman is whering this little thing that only covers half of her breasts. Her nipples should be completely exposed but instead, they are just big blank Marilyn Manson boobs–its freaky. What is the point? ---

dammit i hate when i have stupid typos like “whering”—duh… and the title should be “where did the nipples go?” Geez im a moron. And the reason i posted it in this board is because censorship is vaugely related to art and society. ---

You don’t want to know the various things that flashed through my mind reading “where did the nipples go IN” 😃 They’re probably airbrushed out for the usual (unnecessary, IMHO) reasons. Nipples are on BOOBS and BOOBS are related to sexual whatnots, so therefore, the sight of nipples is BAD and WRONG and SINFUL. Heck, I’ve known people who think it’s immoral to look at lingerie catalogues because “they’re pretty much pornographic”. So there ya go. ---

Yes but for all practical purposes, the woman I am looking at right now in this thing is bare-breasted except for a little support-bra cup thing toward the bottom. How did the nipple become such a taboo item compared to the rest of the breast? I mean, god… a full page bare breasted woman with no nipples. That’s freekn bizzare. ---

I just received a copy of Frederick’s of Hollywood, and couldn’t for the life of me figure out what was wrong with the model on the cover. As I perused the pages it finally clicked, not a one of those poor girls had nipples. I can understand the cover model having her chi-chis airbrushed, since they don’t ship in a plain brown wrapper and you can never underestimate the damage viewing a nipple might do to a child’s psyche. But why the rest of ‘em? They looked sort of pathetic, as though they’d been infantalized, their woman-hood denied. I’m not a fan of ol’ Frederick’s wares to begin with and the implication that a part of me is too wicked to be seen in a catalog full of sex clothes did not inspire a change of mind. Of course, thanks to the thread’s title, that song, Where Did All the Flowers Go? keeps playing in my mind. ---

I would assume the the Victoria’s Secret folks are prudently concerned that nipples could push their catalogue into the realm of pornography by violating obscenity statutes in some localities, so they are playing it safe by excising the nipples. I noticed a similar phenomenon in February’s _Maxim_. ---
