The years, I mean.

It is early Sunday morning. I just happened to be tracking down the group that did the Drew Carey theme song for use in the next Bricker Challenge, and I discover that they also did a cover of _Video Killed The Radio Star_.

So, just for fun, I hauled out my Buggles CD, and listened to the original.

And I found myself remembering high school, and how cool it was to be part of the crowd that listened to New Wave, and how we sneered at the unwashed masses who thought pop music was cool. I remembered dancing at parties and at clubs downtown to this song… and to a host of others. I remembered The Monks, Ultravox, The Cure, Big Country, U2, Tears for Fears, The Police, Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark.

What’s the big deal? As well you might ask.

This was twenty years ago. The Buggles’ album came out in 1979.

Twenty years. WTF??

How can it be twenty years since then? How can I be 36? What the hell happened?

When I was a young boy, my grandparents used many phrases that stick with me. One was “time goes by faster the older you get”. I am only in my mid to late 20’s, but I see now what they meant. It is very true Bricker. The seasons used to seem forever to pass, now they fly bye. I am afraid there is no cure to this problem. All we can do is hold on to our memories, and try to slow things down every now and then.

Bricker…

A bit of a challenge for you.

What is “Video killed the Radio Star” famous for?

Figure it this way: Say the earliest reliable memories you have start at about age four. Over an average lifespan you’ll experience doubling your age about four and one half times- 4,8,16,32,64, 70-100?. Each period subjectively seems about the same. In other words, time is logarithmic.

It was, of course, the first video shown on MTV.

I have a student who shows up wearing Sex Pistols t-shirts. He’s almost 18. It’s really scary to think that he was born about two years after they broke up and 3 years after I outgrew them.

Here’s some bands that I listened to in high school:

X
The Circle Jerks
The Dickies
Agent Orange
The Damned
The Buzzcocks
Bow Wow Wow (boy, is that an embarrasing admission!)
Social Distortion
The Crowd
The Simpletones
DI
TSOL

Is that question just for Bricker, or can anyone answer?

I hate to admit it but I have had so many age discrimination problems since I turned 35. I mean I go to get a date and people will call you an old troll. I NEVER got called that when I was 34. I have been told literally you really nice and cute, but I don’t date people over 35.

I went from being 30-34 to 35-40 which is a whole different age catagory.

When I was looking for a job (yes people asked my age even though it’s illegal, but what are you gonna do) and it was totally different looking for a job at 35 than 34.

Well I could go on but you get the point.

As pointed out time does go by faster.

Look at it this way. When you’re 40 each decade is 25% of your life. When you’re 20 each decade is 50% of your life. This accounts for the speeding up of time. Also you start realizing the things you meant to do you won’t get to do and it is too late to do some things.

As has already been pointed out, it was the first video ever played on MTV.

I remember when MTV was incredibly new.
