Where do cobwebs come from and why do film makers use cobwebs to illustrate aging of structures including things like space ships?

[Cobwebs](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spider_web) are spider’s webs, usually abandoned and dusty. They are used to show a structure aging, because usually they are cleaned off, but if the structure is abandoned than it wouldn’t be cleaned.
