In my medium-small town neck of the woods there are one or two local [female headed folk-rock-whatever type bands](http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=117370860)that are very popular with young(ish) lesbians. They congregate at the venues when the band plays. ---

According to latest media reports in Australia [Alice Springs is the answer](http://www.news.com.au/dailytelegraph/story/0,22049,24858909-5001021,00.html). \*ALICE Springs is to be outed on national television as the lesbian capital of Outback Australia. A television documentary takes a satirical and light-hearted look at the town’s culture of same-sex love. Long-term residents estimate there are several thousand lesbians among Alice’s 25,000 population. Many of them are leading members of the community. There are also believed to be several hundred gay men in the town. Destiny in Alice, a 25-minute co-production by the ABC and CAAMA, says the town became a “haven” for lesbians after several hundred women marched on the Pine Gap intelligence base in 1983. “Many of participants in the protests were lesbians who came, saw and decided to stay,” the ABC says. “Since then, the town of Alice Springs has become a haven for lesbians.” Trisha Morton-Thomas, who narrates the doco as a mock anthropologist, says some lesbian relationships are across racial lines. Alice mayor Damien Ryan said he didn’t have a clue how many lesbians there were in the town. “Nobody has ever done a census,” he said. Mr Ryan said Alice was a thriving, diverse community and people’s sexual preference wasn’t an issue. “I’ve always believed that Alice is a town for everybody. Alice is a unique place … and everybody who wants to make a contribution to the community is welcome,” he said. Alice’s deputy mayor Murray Stewart said the title of lesbian capital of Outback Australia was reasonable. “Per capita, we’re very well represented by lesbians,” he said. “And I don’t care less.”\* The “documentary” airs tonight. ---

You don’t want to just meet all lesbians, you need to meet women who share some interests and values with you. Believe me, when I was first coming out, folks would think “Oh! So-and-so is a lesbian, too - you’d get along great!” Nope. If you don’t feel safe telling much info about yourself on the boards, feel free to PM me, but it would really help to know where you are (approximately) and what sorts of things you enjoy. I’ve helped a few folks around here find friends - I’m sort of a social organizer that way. -Fetch, out 25 years and happily married to JustThinkin for 19. ---

How can I meet lesbians in bars? I mean how do I approach them (for friendship). That’s where I see the majority of young lesbians. Would befriending a bartender and having that bartender introduce me to her friends a good strategy? I am in area where it is freezing cold in January, unfortunately joining a softball or rugby league right now is out of the question. ---

I believe I recall hearing that the best pickup line ever is, “Hello.” 🙂 Introduce yourself to people. If they don’t want to be sociable they won’t be–but if they’re in a bar probably that’s what they are there to do, socialize. Friendship. lust, and romance will all figure themselves out. Jes walk up and say, “Hello.” You don’t even need a follow through for after that one word. In fact you’re probably best without. ---

Well, softball \*is \*a good idea. Depending on where she is, there are tons of other options, too. Around here, we have several gay bowling leagues, hiking groups, social networking groups, dance events… part of narrowing it down is knowing what you like to do. I met lots of lesbians when I first moved here by volunteering at a women’s outdoors organization, going to gay contra-dances, women’s music concerts, women’s basketball games… …but being in a smaller community is a whole 'nother thing. ---

:smack: I totally forgot, I’d asked my sister more info on your behalf, like, days ago! She recommended a site called “The Pink Sofa” which has members all over North America, Europe and Australia (but there are mostly Aussies… or Canadians… shit, I don’t remember what she said!). And she said another good place to look is if your city (if it’s big enough or the neighbouring big city if you’re in a smaller town) has a GLBT Community Center, message board, or gay weekly paper. There are a lot of other social groups that are non-sports (like my sister said she went with a date to a monthly lesbian vegetarian potluck thing) and she said it’s significantly easier to meet _friends_ through the various social groups. As a straight man, I have no idea how to approach any woman in a bar. Generally I would say something like: “Mumble-hi-beer-Cellphone-purdy-mumble-gah!” It didn’t work well.
