# Where do the FLDS\[Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints\] get their money--

But welfare is funded at the state level not at the local level. A whole small town can be gaming the welfare system that is funded by the much larger state population.

Communes, compounds don’t require as much land as building individual houses in a large city. According to this article on the [ranch in Texas](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/YFZ_Ranch), they purchased 1,700 acres for $700,000. They aren’t going to be needing any more land soon.

The value of the buildings is estimated at $3 million. With a reported 10,000 members, that’s about $300 per person. Not impossible.
