I’ve heard one of the producers of the show say that he’s asked this question a lot. He says that it surprises him; is Springfield really a town that you want to be able to say is in your state (or is your city)? Perhaps people should be trying to prove where Sprinfield _isn’t_ located. ---

This game reminds me of the [Sherlock Holmes](http://www.straightdope.com/mailbag/msherlock.html) game. I wonder if it’s an intentional nod. Anyway, I’m leaning toward the theory that Groenig was inspired by the Australian beer writing and that led him to create the Simpsons, but he placed them in Springfield, IL to throw off the hounds. What if we use the process of elimination? Wasn’t there an episode where they got back home from vacation (Florida?) and Marge is crossing the state off of a large map of the US and says something like “Well, there’s another state we can never go to again.” I don’t recall which states were _not_ crossed off, but obviously they must live in one of _them_… ---

They couldn’t go to Arizona because it “smelled funny,” which left ND as their only choice. “Hooray! Mount Rushmore!” “No, that’s in **South** Dakota.” “Ohhhhh…” ---
