Well, I don’t think it’s a zombie resurrection yet, so I’ll report in that I did visit the Computer History Museum today.
'Saw the Difference Engine in operation (it’s lubricated with Canola Oil, as it turns out); a couple of Crays; parts of Colossus and ENIAC; the famed Kitchen Computer (with integrated cutting board); a couple of Apple Is (and a III, and a Lisa); the first mouse; SHAKEY the robot; a NORAD “SAGE” control console—with integral cigarette lighters; a few early hard disks the size of sawmill blades, all sorts of good stuff.
I went there two weeks ago. I strolled around saying “I used that, I used that” - PDP-1, UNIX PC, Commodore 64, Computer Space, the very first coin-op video game. When I get more time I’m going to volunteer there.
They could use a better gift shop. I bought a Difference Engine mug, but only because I felt I had to buy something. But definitely geek heaven, though.
