Still very common in international hotels in Asia/pacific. Probably stayed at 10 hotels in last year in Aussie, NZ, china and Indonesia, all had minibars.
My wife and I have stayed at a couple of somewhat-nice higher-end boutique hotels in some touristy California towns over the last year or so and they had a minibar/honor bar in the room. These were smaller hotels, not part of a Marriot or something like that.
A few years ago I stayed at a very nice hotel in Ho Che Minh City. My bags were stuffed so there was something I intentionally left behind in the room. I went to the desk to check out and before I could complete things a call came to the desk and the clerk notified me that there was something left behind. They had sent someone immediately to the room to inventory it.
In a nice hotel in Bancock I tried to abscond with a bottle opener that I thought I would take as a souvenir. Before I could get in the cab they stopped me and said that a bottle opener was missing. They said it would cost me $3. I pulled out may wallet and the price immediately changed to $10. I went back to my bag, found it and gave it to them.
That’s how they control their mini-bar costs.
But unlike a lapdance, Snickers satisfies you.
Well, if you’re not going anywhere for awhile . . .
