She must have been a bitch. Okie did start out as a derogatory term, from the Depression and Dust Bowl days – they kept showing up in California equipped like the Clampett family – but like Yankee, it’s since become rather innocuous. Indeed, many Okies wear it as a badge of pride (especially if they’re from Muskogee. (“Okie from Muskogee.” But maybe not too many here are old enough to remember that song.
