Meh. Specter was jumping before he was pushed, presumably on the assumption that he’d do better facing a further-left Democrat in the next primary than a further-right Republican. It’ll be interesting to see how that works out for him.
I doubt there’ll be much change in his voting on any significant issues - it’s the minor votes that he’ll now switch to the Dems on.
Thank you for the Mike Murphy TIME article Archiveguy. Many folks like myself have been beating the drum of the demographic change for a while now while others prefer to ignore it since they have no idea how to counter its numbers. It is not morning in America any more.
Can’t speak for him (or her) but sounds to me like he is saying this is no longer the white, settled by Europeans America (not “morning” anymore). The day has moved on and more people are at the table now. The GOP however seems to be stuck in white man world (or more specifically white old man world) and have managed to lose almost every other demographic. This can only bite them in the ass down the road and indeed looks to have already made its presence felt.
To the OP I think the republican party really needs to jettison the religious right. It is keeping the tent small and exclusive…not a way to win elections in a melting pot country.
