Where is this dangerous road located?

I looked it up on Google maps. IIRC that was one of the roads we were specifically warned that it could cost real money if we took a rental car there and any dings or paint chips to the lower part of the car were the result. Plus, if you don’t typically drive those sort of roads, you might end up in a serious accident; and things like rockfalls blocking the road, or too tight to turn around might be a hazard. I.e. stick to the paved highways.

NZ is notorious for its single-lane bridges.

That’s the road I remember - basically a ledge along a cliff. Feels dangerously narrow in a small car.

Further along it widens a bit. At that point we came to an unusual scene: A small school bus was towing a trailer full of whitewater rafts, for a company that offers raft excursions down the river. (I was amazed anyone would attempt this in a vehicle the size of a bus, with or without trailer.)

Things had gone badly wrong: the trailer was off its hitch and about 70’ down the very steep slope. The folks involved had somehow rigged ropes to restrain the trailer from falling down to the river itself (another 200’) and were starting to work on the problem of retrieving the rafts. It was just barely possible for us to inch our small car around the bus.

Further upstream, the valley widens considerably, and it’s possible to drive down to the river on a gravel bar. There we came across a group of about 20 would-be rafters. They asked us if we’d seen signs of their rafts, as they’d been waiting well past the scheduled departure time. We told them it would probably be a good while longer.

The road? I’m wondering why he went alone when he had a perfectly fine companion on the plane with him.
