I’m working on a difficult proposal, though I’d imagine everyone is working on a difficult everything these days. (I apologize to those who would be very happy to be swamped with work, but we are working late nights trying to create some jobs). At around 10:00 tonight, my mind was beginning to wander, and the thought occurred that I was in a nicely diversified melting pot, so I took attendance. For a high value high tech proposal, we had: [ul] [li]One white woman[/li][li]One woman of Japanese descent[/li][li]Three women of Chinese descent[/li][li]One black woman[/li][li]One black man[/li][li]One man of Chinese descent[/li][li]One man of Mexican descent[/li][li]One man of miscellaneous descent (me)[/li][/ul] The proposal needs to clear upper management, and that means that we need to get a pass from an assistant director, a white man, so he can present it to our director, a woman of Italian descent. My mother, of Chinese-but-war-orphan-so-who-really-knows descent, would be very happy to see this list. Yea, we have a token white guy, but really, do they make up only 9% of the population? I thought they used to be everywhere. (Or are they the power brokers going home before 11:00 PM?) I suppose there are some statistics I could Google, but in the past year, I’ve grown to distrust any statistics presented by anybody regarding anything. ---

In my office we’ve got; 13 White men 3 Hispanic men (2 Mexicans and 1 Guatemalan) 2 Native American men 8 White women 2 Hispanic women 1 Native American woman We’re a lot more diversified then I though. ---

My department has: eight white men six Indian men three Mexican men two Vietnamese men one Black man one Black woman one white woman (me) ---

I got your white men right here. At the small, private software firm where I work: 30 white men 12 white women 1 woman of very mixed descent 2 black men 1 indian man 1 indian woman ---

We have 20 white people, of whom 7 are female. All are US natives of generic European stock. we have 1 LGBT and 19 hetero (assuming no closet types). In the past we’ve employed a black man, a naturalized US citizen who was born in Europe, and interns from a university in Mexico. And a whole lot of generic white men & women. We’re not racist or anti-diversity. Generic white people are about the only kind around here, especially with the skills & experience we use. California is not like the middle of the country. ---

If it were any other race the response would be “racism!!!” Then again, depending on who’s doing the hiring maybe this is racism. ---

Well let’s see. Working for me I have 2 Black women 3 Hispanic women 1 Mad Russian man 1 Pakistani male 1 Cambodian man 1 male of other SE Asian orgin (never asked) 1 Hawaiin male 4 Filipinos males 11 Hispanic males from various countries. 2 white males All reporting to myself and one other manager. Fired for being non-politically correct, (before the phrase existed, I think) I never understood it–the law required him to have minorities on his staff, but he was forced to resign…for saying that he had minorities on his staff. ---

No white men (sorry). In my dept, we have: 3 white nurses (I’m the only Protestant) 5 Filipino women 1 African-American woman 3 AA men Any number of Indian/ Pakistani male and female doctors. Any number of AA male and female doctors. 1 Asian anesthesiologist 2 white female anethesiologists. I’m not counting the OR nursing staff (but there are no white males there, either). There is one white male surgeon on staff, so I suppose we have our “token” as well. 🙂 ---
