A friend turned me on to this great job opportunity that I am pretty much qualified for. The problem is that my work history doesn’t look that great on paper. I want to beef up my resume and tailor it to this specific job. I also want to get help with the cover letter and such. Like I said, I am qualified for this, even if it’s a lofty goal. I think if I could get my foot in the door for an interview it would be mine. I make a good impression in person and I’ve never been turned down for a job once I’ve had an interview. Any advice on this? They want resumes, etc. mailed to them rather than emailed, so I want to get this out within the next few days. I really really want this job, but I am very nervous about the way my resume looks. (And yes, I’ve tried books on resumes. They just don’t help much. I think I need to hire someone to help with it.) ---

Do you know anyone who works in human resources at all? They’re often good resources to tap for help with resumes, without having to pay lots of $$ to get someone to re-write it for you. Do you mind if I ask what sort of position it is, and what sort of work history/other experiences you have? I’m not a professional resume writer, but I’ve worked for a recruitment firm where I was in charge of culling the resumes before forwarding them to the boss, so I’ve got a bit of an idea of how to help tart one up if you’re just looking for some general ideas. ---

I don’t know if this is true for everywhere, but my junior college has a job center and provides resume help. You might call colleges/universities around your area and see if there is similar help there. ---

One of my chess mates was in Personnel. Although my resume was acceptable, he really tidied it up and emphasised my strengths. Can you find someone similar?
