Where'd your username come from?

This question comes around every few months.

I have a useless habit of remembering useless bits of information. I used to read a dictionary to fight boredom. My friends used me as a walking spell check and encyclopedia. “Go ask Nott,” they’d say. I saw the wordplay on JFK’s inaugural address, and that was my username. It has been for a long time.

People keep telling me they thought I was dead.

My three undergraduate majors – physics, maths, and computer engineering.

I didn’t choose my name very well; it’s actually a mashup of my real name. It’s one of the reasons I haven’t posted my picture in the gallery and why I rarely comment in sexually explicit threads. I prefer to remain anonymous and with this stupid username it’s too easy to figure out who I am if you know me.

A character in a short story I wrote back in the 80’s for a BBS using Commodore 64’s. He was a devilish Cajun with bad habits and bad intentions. None of that applies to me, but I liked the name.

No relation to music groups that came along later. I might have had some thoughts about the Coneheads on SNL but I didn’t borrow directly from that.

I use to be Mr. Happy Sunshine

Then I went to college and read some books in the ‘special’ section.

Bible reference, anti-war slogan, and Magic: the Gathering card. I don’t use this name for anything else online.

You’re Jordan?
If you really are Jordan, I don’t actually want to know.

Nowhere. It was the first thing that popped into my head. I might’ve been Anodyne Fruit Cup or Pony Floss or Boneless Viceroy or…

The truth is boring sometimes, which is why I prefer to avoid it.

I joined the boards because I was really curious, and we all know where that leads…

International Master Josh Waitzkin (the real version of the character in Searching for Bobby Fischer) talked about a player’s ability to just ‘feel’ what the correct move is in a given position through experience and intuition. He called it a chessic sense. I’m a Class B, nearly Class A player.

Czech for lawyer. The various “Spider-Man” permutations were all taken.

And I played off this.

I just made mine up.

My grandmother’s pronunciation of “terrible”.

[obligatory]Inconceivable![/obligatory]

I found mine in a random Internet name generator. I liked it, so I started using it.

My old name was a new vocabulary word at the time, something to aspire to. Also, a synasthete I knew on another board described it and it sounded beautiful.

I don’t think that word means what you think it means.

From a song by the band Acid Bath. A line in the chorus is “the skyscrapers look like gravestones from out here,” I just took it one step further one day coming back from the mountains and it’s stuck as a handle.

I’m a percussionist (mostly traditional African and pick-up drum circles). Also a Deadhead.

Billy and Mickey’s band/extravaganzas were the Rhythm Devils. I don’t like vowels. Or spelling.

Rhythmdvl

Another poster had the name of one of my favorite foods “tatertot” I thought that was kind of nice, so I picked a different food I was keen on at the time.

Of course, now I feel a responsibility to respond to any cheesesteak related questions, even though I don’t life in Philly and don’t really eat them very often.
