I have a useless habit of remembering useless bits of information. I used to read a dictionary to fight boredom. My friends used me as a walking spell check and encyclopedia. “Go ask Nott,” they’d say. I saw the wordplay on JFK’s inaugural address, and that was my username. It has been for a long time.
I didn’t choose my name very well; it’s actually a mashup of my real name. It’s one of the reasons I haven’t posted my picture in the gallery and why I rarely comment in sexually explicit threads. I prefer to remain anonymous and with this stupid username it’s too easy to figure out who I am if you know me.
A character in a short story I wrote back in the 80’s for a BBS using Commodore 64’s. He was a devilish Cajun with bad habits and bad intentions. None of that applies to me, but I liked the name.
No relation to music groups that came along later. I might have had some thoughts about the Coneheads on SNL but I didn’t borrow directly from that.
International Master Josh Waitzkin (the real version of the character in Searching for Bobby Fischer) talked about a player’s ability to just ‘feel’ what the correct move is in a given position through experience and intuition. He called it a chessic sense. I’m a Class B, nearly Class A player.
I found mine in a random Internet name generator. I liked it, so I started using it.
My old name was a new vocabulary word at the time, something to aspire to. Also, a synasthete I knew on another board described it and it sounded beautiful.
From a song by the band Acid Bath. A line in the chorus is “the skyscrapers look like gravestones from out here,” I just took it one step further one day coming back from the mountains and it’s stuck as a handle.
Another poster had the name of one of my favorite foods “tatertot” I thought that was kind of nice, so I picked a different food I was keen on at the time.
Of course, now I feel a responsibility to respond to any cheesesteak related questions, even though I don’t life in Philly and don’t really eat them very often.
