> My own view is that the Dems should just write 2020 off. Run a good left-wing candidate, but focus more energy on downballet races. We are due for another recession soon, and if it doesn’t come before 2020, whoever is president after that will almost certainly be in office during a recession and then blamed for it. At that point, any Republican can run and win in 2024, not to mention there’d be yet another new red wave of lunatics in the midterms. Trump might even run for a non-consecutive 2nd term

“Writing 2020 off” would mean a good chance Ginsburg and perhaps Breyer get replaced by Trump nominees. Right now the two are likely to outlast Trump’s first term. Whether they could hang on yet an additional 4 years beyond that is truly doubtful.

As for Trump running for office a 2nd nonconsecutive term ala Grover Cleveland, he’d be 79 by 2025 and 82 by 2028; doubtful too.

I don’t think taking advice from Trump fans is a very good idea. So let’s not, shall we?

> Biden will be 76 years old this November, meaning if elected President, he’ll be 78. This is very old. Too old to guarantee a 4 year term, and probably too old to get re-elected at age 82, and sworn in again at 83.

As I said. Good VP choice is all that matters here.

> [@](#):
>
> Biden has always been gaffe prone. That is only going to get worse with age.

LOL. Yeah. Trump makes a potentially national-crisis-inducing gaffe EVERY WEEK–and usually more than once. Rage tweets? “Would/wouldn’t”? “Maybe the hacks were some fat guy on a bed”? Spare me the faux concern.

BWAH HA HA HA HA. Most of American prefers Obama to Trump, so yep, thank goodness Biden carries that same reputation.

Um, you may not have heard this, but _his son had just fucking died._ Of course he didn’t have the steam.

Yes. We know. You did it in at least one previous post. It’s as stupid a comparison as it was last time. Biden is enjoyable, good natured, funny (intentionally) and smart as a whip. There is no similarity except age, which… hey, remember the deity Reagan? Biden’s four times as sharp as Reagan was.

> [@](#):

> I tend to think Democrats will lose some of the support they enjoy from Jewish Americans mainly because Trump is very pro Israel .

Hey guess what. ALL JEWS DO NOT PRIORITIZE ISRAEL. Here’s one right in front of you. I mean, I care, to the degree that it’s a democracy in the Middle East and it’s nice to have around, but they are not my top priority, or even in the top ten. I agree that they commit a lot of mistakes and are not beyond scrutiny. And the Palestinians deserve their own land, and Israelis need to get the fuck out of the West Bank.

Most Jews are smarter than you think. [We went for Clinton in a BIG WAY against Mr. “I prefer the guys with yarmulkes to count my money” Trump.](https://www.haaretz.com/world-news/clinton-won-majority-of-jewish-american-vote-polls-say-1.5459522)

Oh. _Borders._ Well, frankly? Fine with me. I don’t care enough. Sorry, **Alessan**.

Good lord, man, you realize we’re not voting for president tomorrow, right? And Trump is single-handedly taking a sledgehammer to trade, taxes, healthcare and the labor force by way of immigration. I daresay your “quite well” economy won’t last another two years at this rate.

> Someone who survived an assassination attempt–assuming she’s doing well, and Wikipedia says she’s gone skydiving so I’m gathering she is–seems tough and has an excellent survival story that will resonate with young voters post-Parkland. Her gun-control activism might be an issue, but honestly, the Dems are never going to get the gun nuts anyway.

There are other gun owners who aren’t “nuts” but also aren’t comfortable with the idea of people who seemingly have no acceptance for the idea of guns for self-defense, who seem to be against the _existence_ of guns as objects rather than against the _misuse_ of guns…I’m not sure if Giffords herself actually falls into this category, but certainly a lot of the gun control movement in the main does appear to - but anyone who talks about banning any kind of gun is a liability in the general election.

The single biggest issue Giffords has been associated with, is gun control. Now, if _anyone_ has a good reason to associate themselves with that issue, it’s her - but it’s a liability in a presidential campaign.

No, the Democrats aren’t going to win the votes of NRA members and hardcore 2nd-amendment absolutists, but there’s an excluded middle here and “gun banners” are one of their no-nos, and why even take the chance of having an unnecessary no-no on the ticket?

Did you read that article? Among voters, most didn’t put Israel in the top five issues they care about.

> [@Haaretz](#):
>
> The poll shows that Israel was not a key issue for Jewish voters in this election. Among the top 10 issues that influenced their votes, the economy, healthcare, and ISIS and terrorism headed the list. **Israel came in only at No. 8.**
>
> On Mideast policy, 65 percent of American Jews said they supported the United States playing an active role in resolving the Israeli-Arab conflict. A small majority of 53 percent said they supported the United States applying pressure on Israel to make compromises for peace.
>
> The poll shows that 81 percent of American Jews still support a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, virtually unchanged from four years ago. **Close to that share (78 percent) said that Israel should stop building in the West Bank settlements. A substantial majority of the Iranian nuclear deal.63 percent of American Jewish voters said they supported the Iranian nuclear deal.**

So, no. Believe it or not, U.S. Jewish voters actually care more about the country they live in than Israel. And when it comes to the middle east issues, they lean in the same direction general Democrats do.

Right. Look, the hard core gun nuts are 100% GOP (or other right wing parties). But there are a lot of hunters, etc in the middle, those that wouldn’t have any problem with things like a bump-stock ban or instant background checks. But if you start with a hardcore antigun activist, they will run into the arms of the GOp fast.

While I bristle at the term “Gun Nut” I am a firm believer in the 2nd amendment, own several guns and several acres of land, drive a lifted 2018 F350 Diesel… and voted democratic the last 3 elections.

The idea (lie/propaganda) that the democrats want to take guns is ludicrous on so many levels it still amazes me anyone believes it.

Background checks, ban on assault weapons, even smart locks are both reasonable and sensible but also a rallying cry for the NRA/GOP

No, it’s not. Warren Buffett, who is sharp as a tack is 87. There are 70 Nobel Laureates older than that.

26 were 83 and older.

I got no problem with Background checks as long as anyone can do one when trasferring a gun.
What is a “assault weapon”? That’s the issue. And such weapons are used in less that 2% of crimes.

Smart locks? Unreliable.

Out here in CA they decided to “register” bullet-button assault weapons, but just like last time, the paperwork couldnt be filed or the site “went down”, instantly making thousands of law abiding Californians felons overnite.

I remember Joe Barton (R-Texas) saying Carbon Dioxide is not a pollutant “because CO2 is in your Coca Cola”… while lining his pocket with oil money. - [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E-XAUm4WXaY](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E-XAUm4WXaY)

Gordon Klingenschmitt (R-Colorado) - Obamacare causes cancer and believed a demonic spirit lived in Obama. - [Man Who Believes 'Obamacare Causes Cancer' Wins GOP Primary In Colorado | HuffPost Latest News](https://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/06/25/gordon-klingenschmitt_n_5530541.html)

The above was more for humor than to take seriously, but all but the most extreme on either side of the aisle, want or believe that the Government wants… or more importantly… ever could ban guns by repealing the 2nd amendment.

Now that’s how you do a gendered insult!

I don’t think she should be the candidate, the mere fact that she has so much experience in office does make a difference.

Who exactly is voting for “white” or “dude”? Military vets _don’t_ win the US Presidency since 1992. He won’t even bring his own state, you mean? … … Probably moderate? You mean you have no idea what he would do in the office. This is silly.

And again, there ain’t no way Trump would be able to make a former Navy SEAL, the admiral who led the mission to kill Bin Laden, look weak or incompetent. The dude oozes leadership.

Yeah, OK. But I think your crush on Tex McRaven is silly.

_She was shot in the face._

If this level of disrespect for victims of political terror is what we’re getting from alleged moderates (what state are you from again?), then it’s time for an “immoderate” gun control movement.

So much experience?:dubious: _One year_ as a senator. Six years as CA AG.

Very little experience.

You can’t possibly think I’m the only one saying the Dems should run a white male at the top of the ticket in 2020.

Until they do.

I actually think he could, especially with the right running mate, as I’ve already said. And, again, you can’t possibly think I’m the only person saying the Dems should run someone from a red state at the top of the ticket in 2020. Even if they don’t necessarily win that state.

What’s silly? I’m saying I’d like to see him run. The point of the primary is to see where people stand.

This from the guy who suggested LeBron James?

OK, fine. I didn’t want Kamala Harris to be the nominee anyway. I think it should be a Midwesterner with working-class cred.

But maybe all the “moderates” that want absolute gun rights and free market capitalism and candidates who are white Texan military brass should enter the GOP and try to pull them back from the brink, or form their own party, rather than expecting the Democrats to cater to them.

There are too many pro-choice voters for there to be two pro-life parties. There are too many anti-gun voters for there to be two gun-rights parties. And now there are too many voters suffering from long-term economic failure for there to be two economically conservative parties.

By the numbers, the Democrats need some white voters (over half the country) and they need _Midwestern_ voters and they need _poor_ voters. The NRA & the laissez-faire types already have representation, and the Dems can’t poach them.

And right now, the second-best advertisement for gun control is the gun fetishists posing with their guns like a bunch of suicide bombers. The best advertisement for gun control is the news.

LeBron isn’t from\* Texas.\* No more white Southron boys, please!

And it seems to me that too many American voters–how did Bill Clinton put it? Oh yeah–_loathe the military._ It’s not fair, it’s not right, it’s not just, but it really doesn’t seem to be a positive. There aren’t enough veterans to make it work.

As for white and dude, you are going to be running _against_ white and dude. You can’t run a white man on race against a white man, is all I’m saying. Maybe I misunderstood your point.
