In the Hamster household we have a new puppy, and the new puppy’s poop is considerably more disgusting than the poop produced by our hamsters, Marshmallow and Tater Tot. Which leads me to ask – which animal produces the least disgusting poop? Unicorns, as everyone knows, poop rainbows, which are not disgusting at all. However, unicorns aren’t real, so they don’t count. Is there any real animal I could own that would produce waste that would be entirely inoffensive, or even pleasant? Are there any animals whose output smells like cedar shavings, or Skittles, or frying bacon, for example? ---

Rabbits that eat good diets (lots of hay, supplemented with greens) poop hard little round balls that are pretty dry upon deposit, and if left there will dry out into what looks like a tiny pile of finely-ground hay. Which is mostly what it is, really. I haven’t noticed any odor from my rabbits’ droppings but admit that I don’t exactly sniff the stuff up close, either. ---

Earthworm [poop](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vermicompost)is basically just rich earth. Doesn’t smell like anything (ok, I’ve never been around _huge_ quantities) and makes everything grow better. So does rabbit poop, for that matter! ( **Ferret Herder** , it cracks me up that you beat me into this thread. I’ve had ferrets - they don’t qualify for this thread at all! 🙂 ) ---

It seems to me dry poop is the way to go. I’d be looking at a small desert animal like the kangaroo rat. ---

Among larger animals, I’d say horses. Their poop is basically grass, once it dries out a bit. ---

Even desert-adapted rodent poop is a bit stinky if it’s allowed to pile up. The waste produced by _[Anobium punctatum](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_furniture_beetle)_ is just like powdery sawdust, but they don’t make great pets if you have wooden furniture ---

Cat poop isn’t much less disgusting than small dog poop, but cats are much more meticulous about covering the stuff up. ---

Ferrets **definitely** do not qualify! :eek: That’s one of the most noticeable and welcome changes I’ve noticed going from being a herder of ferrets to one of rabbits. ---

This is not something you would be likely to say when Old Dan walks up to your bed roll in the middle of the night and drops a steaming pile of half digested alfalfa about a foot from your head. It does have a pungent odor, considerable vile fluids, serves as a dandy wake up call and makes a very interesting sound as it hits.. ---

Fish. They live in their own toilet, and bacteria and algae do most of the clean up. Once a week, just scoop out some “pond water” and refill the tank from the tap. ---

Deer poop is a lot like rabbit poop, and I give deer the edge over rabbits because of their size. By rights an adult deer could squeeze out three pounds of rancid chili and walk away unembarrassed, but no, it’s just a little pile of dry, uniform balls.
