The best show: The Hip in Latham, NY. They played a small bar right before “Day for Night” came out. We were in the front row and it was the best goddamn show I’ve…ever…seen! Such raw energy!

The worst show: Wang (F**king) Chung

Probably numerous others I’m forgetting at the moment…

I have a list that’s about average, but only 3 artists that I have seen, or will see in the near future, more than once:

Schascle/Twinkle: As much as bjork and emiliana torrini are above her, Schascle is nonetheless above all other female singers. Seen her at least 6 times…if you like blues/rock/jazz/soul (her style’s really indescribable), see her.

Dashboard Confessional: Seen them twice, and will see them for a third time this Thursday. When I describe that their concert is a sing-along, ppl say “a lot of bands do that”. No, they don’t, you really didnt listen when I mentioned the extent to which they do this. For a music geek like me it provides nice reinforcement of my musical knowledge, and the knowledge that other people share this with me.

Heart: probably my second-favorite arena-rock artists, besides Led Zep. This time, however, they are playing smaller places: last time I saw them at House of Blues they did the best song I’ve heard from anyone in concert: cover of Battle of Evermore (just think of the harmonies they exploited in that song!). I include them here because they are coming back here in winter and I am soooo there.

Err, let’s see…

Neil Young
Gregg Allman and Friends
Oteil and the Peacemakers
Susan Tedeschi
Kartik Seshadri (sitar player)

Aerosmith
Janet Jackson (my first show; I was young)

A couple of these were at festival-type things. There was also a ska show in there (forgive me, I was maybe 15). The only name I remember was The Scofflaws.

Opening acts that I can remember include Susan Tedeschi (3), Lucinda Williams (2), Robert Randolph and the Family Band, Galactic (2), Warren Haynes acoustic, Ronnie Earl and the Broadcasters, Lefty Collins, Jerry Cantrell, Robert Bradley’s Blackwater Surprise, Duncan Sheik, Collective Soul…

In no particular order:

Jose Feliciano (my mom took me)
The Scorpions
Ratt (opened for the Scorpions)
Journey
ZZ Top
Def Leppard (twice; once with 5 non-Leppard fans)
Commander Cody (in 1992)
The Subdudes (opened for Commander Cody)
Eddie Money (at the fair)
Loverboy (opened for Eddie Money)
REM
Soundgarden
Train (in a 1400 seat venue–wonderful show)
Wood (opened for Train)
Barenaked Ladies
Guster (opened for BNL)
The Tragically Hip

Best concert was definitely Barenaked Ladies.

I had a great time a both Def Leppard concerts, if you discount the drunken fans. REM put on a great show, but the venue was outdoors (the Gorge at George, Washington) which wasn’t the best for their music and the crowd sucked.

My least favorites: ZZ Top–the band played for 45 minutes and left, and Ratt–the distortion was so bad that you really had no idea which of their crappy songs they were playing.

I really, really want to go see Chris Isaak and probably will see him next year when he comes to Seattle. And I really want to see Martin Zellar, but since I’m not going to the mid West and he isn’t coming to Washington, I don’t see that happening.
