I’d have to say that Strunk and White’s The Elements of Style is what I consider to be my Bible.

I’ve found the New International Version to be the thickest and most absorbent.
Because it was Iluvatur’s will, that’s why! (Whew, I’ve wanted to come across with that line for soooooo long, and I finally got the chance! :D)
Well, I, for one, am shocked and aghast the no one has mentioned the One True Bible: The Straight Dope by Cecil Adams. 
Oh, that Bible. I use the RSV (The New Oxford Annotated Bible with the Aposcypha, Expanded Edition, Revised Standard Version, for longhair 
)
Why? Because when I took my theology class, and gave the textbook person my class schedule, that’s the bible she gave me with my other texts. (There was a list of acceptable translations, but that was the one recommended by the instructor for anyone who didn’t have one of the translations listed.)

I’m personally partial to the New Jerusalem Bible, because it combines accuracy of translation with ease of reading. The NJB is my main study bible.
For plain old ease of reading, I like the New American Bible. I also have a Douay-Rheims bible, which I don’t read much because I find the archaic English a bit hard to chew through.
For literature and poetry, I like the King James Version with what the Protestants like to call the Apocrypha.
The Straight Dope Encyclopedia is the Ultimate Reference Set.
I found the Silmarillion a bit depressing.

Actually, you said you found it “irritating.” And my point, which was clearly spelled out, was that generally when people are not included in a question around here, they don’t post talking about how irritating it was for them not to be included. But since you’re so easily irritated, I won’t bring it up again.
I have several, loan them out, get them back, loan them out again.
I keep and use the New Jerusalem Bible in paperback and miss the copiously annotated hardback (used to take one out at the library). It seems so clear without the modern lingo.
The Anchor Bible is what I want when I want to go behind the words. I only own a couple but library has most of the set. I very seldom get past the OT anyway.
Oh, I’m gonna keep using these #%@&* codes 'til I get 'em right.
