> R2-D2, from _Star Wars_. Entrusted with an urgent mission, he plays a snippet of his former owner’s SOS hologram, then makes up a story about his restraining bolt preventing him from playing the complete message. He does all of this in a successful effort to deceive the young nephew of his new owner to remove the restraining bolt, which permits him to escape and continue his mission.

actually, you could say 98 percent of StarWars is because of something R2-D2 did simply because in the books he was the only one who knew everything about everyone involved despite having his memory “erased” he still retained it all from the phantom menace although wasnt he in amadialas palace ?
I remeber a discussion that people said SW sort of alluded to that R2 might of been a force capable droid…

_“I don’t want to kill Ultron; he’s unique. And he’s in pain. But that pain will roll over the Earth. So he must be destroyed: every form he’s built, every trace of his presence on the 'net. We have to act now, and not one of us can do it without the others. Maybe I am a monster; I don’t think I would know, if I were one. I’m not what you are, and not what you intended. So there may be no way to make you trust me.”_

Douglas Rain’s performance as HAL (in _2001: A Space Odyssey_) is dominated by his use of a very “reasonable” tone of voice—used in a clear attempt to persuade.

Of course the attempt failed. But the intent was there.

> While he would protest that he is an android, and not a robot, Lt. Cmdr. Data was known to be very persuasive. He managed to convince an admiral that he was indeed sentient and had the right to determine his own destiny when it was proposed that he be turned over to the Daystrom Institute for study. (_ST:TNG - The Measure of A Man_)

Hah, that was nothing Data did. It was clearly the sentience of Riker’s awesome new beard steering everything the way it needed to go.

_Bicentennial Man_ basically is a replay of the Adam Link stories, mentioned above, that heavily influenced the young Asimov.

Whoa! I always wondered if I had dreamed that movie, I thought it was one of the many “Beach” movies with Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello, no wonder I never found clips of it before.

Some of those Special Circumstances AIs in Iain Banks’ _Culture_ novels were pretty persuasive - particularly at offers one couldn’t refuse.
