Which "non-essential" businesses are actually essential?

Are the (actual, nighttime) homeless shelters still open? I don’t imagine they have the facilities to isolate everybody. Seems like a bad time to be homeless.

In Illinois, they are on the essential list.

Ontario as well.

Is there ever a good time to be homeless?

As far as I’ve heard, the shelters are still open. The only mention I see of COVID-19 on the websites of the Union Rescue Mission and the Los Angeles Mission are in pleas for donations. Obviously it’s a concern, though:

LA County is working on setting up some temporary shelters using empty buildings and trailers. They’re also setting up hand-washing stations outside homeless tent cities in an apparent acknowledgment that we’re still not going to be able to put a roof over all 50,000 of them, to say nothing of walls between them.

Something to keep in mind when we’re all going stir-crazy inside our homes.

First thing around here was to completely shut down any kind of public transport (12 days ago). By any means essential business. That looked like flucked up decision at that time, but looks like it worked out. So, how essential people commute to their workplaces now: solo in the car, by foot or bike or the don’t. Some can telework, but most important out of the box realization was, there are heck a lot of sudden emptied airbnb and similar places, which are now full of long commuting essential staff. For free.

In PA you can still buy take-out beer. A bar I liked to go to during before-times had guys who would walk in, buy as much cheap beer as they could carry, go home and drink it. Later in the day they’d return and do it again.
